Can srt passthru?
Can srt passthru?
Hi everybody. Just one question:
Is there any possibility during the video encoding to keep/pass thru the original srt file without converting it?
I love the Handbrake and am unable to switch to anything else however there is a problem that Handbrake changes the srt format to ssa.
For me it is unacceptable, so I always have to spend some time to extract the original srt files from the original container and then add them to newly encoded one. I hate that process...
I'm not sure what is the problem with encoding the srt format, perhaps there are some copyright issues, but is it so even if the Handbrake would not touch it...?
Thank you for your attention and have a nice day

Re: Can srt passthru?
No, it will always be converted to timed text or SSA, depending on your output container.
Re: Can srt passthru?
If you insist on having an "SRT attached", there are utilities to merge them in, after-the-fact. And some players will accept them as separate files, if they are placed and named correctly.
But handbrake is going to convert them to a compatible format for the container you specify, as mduell says.

Re: Can srt passthru?
OK, thank you guys, I understand what you say, however I don't understand why there couldn't be a passthru option, like it is with the audio - AC3 passthru, EAC-3 passthru, AAC passtru - which I often use...
Could you please tell the programmers to think about that?
Actually there is one more think which could be improved:
When I want to do perhaps some series, many 40 episodes, I set the parametres which are common for every episode and then I have to click each episode in the Title one by one to get them in the queue.
It would be nice if I could highlight all entries in the Title and add them to the queue by one click...
Again, could you please tell the programmers to think about that?
These are improvements which I'm waiting for already for ages...
Thank you for your attention
Regards

Re: Can srt passthru?
Easier to support one subtitle processing pipeline than two. A lot less user and developer concern about subs than audio.
Re: Can srt passthru?
Thank you rolling_eng I did not know about this option. I appreciate your help.
Re: Can srt passthru?
With this philosophy you can simplify the entire HandBrake program...
Besides isn't it a programmer's pleasure to have some challenge to improve his creation?
I believe the passthru options for subtitles should be there and it would be welcomed by the users.
Re: Can srt passthru?
Not in ways arbitrarily demanded by users.
Feel free to submit a patch, along with a commitment for ongoing maintenance.
