Inserting video into keynote

Please excuse my ignorance - i'm not an editor or anything, and don't really understand all the 'logcode' lingo that's requested.
I'm just trying to insert a video into keynote and keep getting 'the 'video' cannot be inserted' and 'cannot decode' message.
I've downloaded handbrake as i'm told that will help convert to a new format, but i'm still struggling... it seems to convert into formats i can't use.
Is there a step-by-step guide anywhere that could help me?
many thanks to this community for any support.... I'm trying to do a nice thing for a friend with the keynote presentation (it's for her special birthday) so some nice karma my way would be appreciated as i'm so frustrated....some of the videos have inserted no problem, but some get the above message and i can't really see why as many have the same '.mov' suffix

Thank you but I've followed all these steps and i can't import the file into keynote... it doesn't even seem to be a movie file that's created and when i try to open it i'm told 'Quicktime player cannot open files in the 'data' format'

The part before that. Did you add the file extension to the file? For example .mp4
