Am I just wasting my time trying to use an AMD GPU with Handbrake? Espcially with Linux?

Not even kidding asking this.
I bought an AMD GPU mainly because the drivers aren't closed-source like Nvidia GPUs, but I've had nothing but problems getting it working properly with Handbrake. I've spend weeks and dozens of hours uninstalling and reinstalling AMD GPU drivers, and while it seems to allow me now to use hardware encoding for H264 and H265, it stops responding partway through any transcode, and no one seems to be able to help.
Please, don't tell me 'use WIndows instead', I'll just throw things at you.
Just tell me: are Nvidia GPUs easier to get working in linux with Handbrake? Can someone who is using Ubuntu or Debian (which Ubuntu is based on) using an Nvidia GPU with Handbrake with no problems?
