Thanks again for hanging with me.

I'm in the middle of a longer stress test with prime 95 while I watch temps with HWinfo. Just to be sure, I also reset the bios to optimized defaults (but I think that's what it was before). In case you're wondering, handbrake still failed after the bios reset.

I ran a lot of tests with handbrake yesterday and I'm not sure which ones had the threads=1 setting. I tried looking in the handbrake logs and did a search for "threads" but didn't find anything. I'll try again once I complete this stress test (which may last for hours). I'm mainly monitoring the temperature or a system crash if it's unstable.

In the meantime, I found this in the Windows Application log when I tried running the latest version of handbrake this morning:

Faulting application name: HandBrake.Worker.exe, version: 1.7.3.0, time stamp: 0x656f0000
Faulting module name: hb.DLL, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x65c7ff2e
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000001251943
Faulting process id: 0x0x4DAC
Faulting application start time: 0x0x1DA70A42A6F3DAE
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\HandBrake\HandBrake.Worker.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\HandBrake\hb.DLL
Report Id: 1a6c7f51-8818-46f7-b216-4f8b4a004ddc
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

I don't know if this is of any help to the developers.

Update. Still running prime95 stress test.

But while running, I thought I'd simply make the load that much more stressful by running the latest version of handbrake at the same time. And so far, it seems to be working! I just completed one file that it was consistently aborting with yesterday and it ran to completion - about a 20-minute job. I am having it run another even longer job right now (while prime95 continues to run), and so far it is about 15% thru without a hiccup with another 35 mins to go.

What does that tell us? Should I run a more comprehensive memory test? Previously I had run the free version of the memory test without springing for the $50 version.

It's not.

Don't waste your money. It seems like the memory is fine.

How many different sources have you tried at this point? MakeMKV is well known for being reliable and producing clean files and it's unusual to see HB choke on files it produces

Update. The second 35-minute conversion also worked perfectly. Both of these cases are with Prime95 running in the background at full bore.

Here are the logs form the last two successfully completed runs which took place while Prime 95 was running.

That's pretty weird. I hope the answer is that I don't have to run Prime95 simultaneously with handbrake to get handbrake to work.

So maybe Prime95 is changing the allocation of resources enough that handbrake now works? It would be helpful if we knew a little more detail about why handbrake worker is dying.

In the meantime, the only thing I can think of is to work with Gigabyte and, among other things, make sure I have all the latest motherboard drivers? Something else?

I'm going to stop Prime 95 and retest, but I wanted to post this result first while I can still get to it.

Re: Handbrake Stopped Working Reliably

Stopped Prime95 and restarted the last successful job with handbrake. It seemed to be going ok, but I didn't let it finish. Instead I rebooted my machine and then reran handbrake. This time it failed after a few mins. It was trying to convert the same exact file as the 35 minute one that worked when Prime 95 was running in the background. Here's the log:

Re: Handbrake Stopped Working Reliably

Post by dwiercioch »

Thanks again for hanging with me.

To follow up on a previous request, I reset the job to vary the number of threads. At first, I used "threads=1", but that looked like it was going to run in excess of 90 mins, so I changed it to "threads=12" instead. Even with that said, the job was going to take about 30 mins. I let it run and it looked like it was going to complete, but with about 30 seconds remaining, the computer froze and I was forced to do a hard reboot. I really thought we had something there!

Here is the handbrake event log I grabbed from the handbrake log folder for that job:

I will try again with "threads=8". Let's see how that goes.

reducing thread count essentially reduces the load on the system. In theory, making such issues less likely.

If it were me, I'd be looking at RMA'ing hardware now or returning it if that's still an option.

For those of you who have stayed with me and continue to offer suggestions, thanks so much.

I just ran with threads=8. That one worked successfully to completion, but it took a little over an hour to complete when I suspect this job should have been completed in about 10-15 minutes. So I think I am making progress - and possibly have a way for me to limp along - but I kind of feel like I have bought this powerful Ferrari race car with the latest high-performance engine but am being forced to disable 75% of the cylinders when I need it most on the racetrack.

So the question in my mind is whether this is a software problem or a hardware problem. I think it would be really helpful to know exactly why the handbrake worker executable fails besides the nebulous error 12 code. If it turns out to be a hardware problem, that information might go a long way toward getting support from either Gigabyte or Intel (or Windows).

Does anyone have any other ideas? Short of that, I'm not very hopeful about getting any meaningful support from Gigabyte. Maybe I should try Intel?

I bought this machine thru Microcenter, having them build it for me from parts that met my needs. In the past, I've built them myself. I think I'm going to talk with them about the possibility of a return.

You're getting a segfault here. Unfortunately there isn't a way to determine exactly what caused this.

HandBrake is operating in what's called "user space". Windows isolates applications so they cannot cause system level hangs / reboots. Thus, in order for such an event to happen, it would occur in "kernel space". (i.e a Windows, Driver, firmware bug or hardware failure.)

Given that your seeing "better" stability with lower threads and thus putting less load on the system, I'd theorise that the CPU is failing certain instructions under heavy load.

What if you try non-optimized defaults. Like default defaults. Vanilla. No optimization.

Just out of curiosity do you have the same issues with x265 or hardware encoding?

Even though my PC is slightly over the 30 day return window, Microcenter is going to swap out my i9 processor. (Our local Microcenter has ALWAYS been outstanding in my experience, with actually knowledgeable people, and this is another shining example of how to retain customers. They will always get my business for any significant technology even if I might be able to find it a little cheaper elsewhere.)

I should have my system back later today. I’m hopeful that this new processor in conjunction with a new layer of high quality thermal paste might be the answer.

I’m not 100% convinced my problem is stress related since I’m getting mixed test results. On the one hand, it seems like reducing the number of threads has a positive impact in stability. That does indeed suggest a stress and/or heat related problem. On the other hand, handbrake worked absolutely perfectly at full throttle when I ran it simultaneously with the Prime95 stress test. That’s stress on steroids. That makes me think it is more likely related to a different resource allocation. Regardless, I just want to get this solved since handbrake does exactly what I want and I’ve been using it for years.

Definitely appreciate the continued support and interest all of you have been providing. Thanks so much!

Stay tuned.

That’s stress on steroids.
It depends on what Windows gave priority. 100% of Prime 95 is not the same as 100% of HandBrake. The underlying libraries in HandBrake make heavy use of AVX, SSE instructions which prime 95 won't be hitting to the same extent. So it's exercising the CPU in a different way.

If P95 takes priority, the actual overall load could technically be lower. The Utilisation % in task manager doesn't tell the full story of what the CPU is actually doing.

I would honestly be surprised if the CPU was bad. It's incredibly rare. Motherboards being hot garbage on the other hand, pretty common.

Can you try forcing the handbrake worker process that is taking the most cpu resources to only use specific cores? You can do this in Task manager -> Details -> Right click the handbrake process doing the encode -> Set Affinity -> Choose either the first cores or the last ones (i'm not sure if the e-cores are the first ones or last ones on the list). A better way of doing this is using Process Lasso, which shows you what cores you are enabling or disabling but it's a third party piece of software.
This won't "fix" your problem but maybe it can tell you if it's indeed related to the different cores scheduling.

Update. I am still awaiting the return of my PC from Microcenter where the person who built my PC no longer works there and so they’ve been trying to reassign the work. Hopefully today.

The more I read on my own the more I’m beginning to think there might be a cooling problem. When I was running stress tests, I noticed the temperature of the cpu was often hitting 100C. That is the max rating for this processor. So maybe when they replace the processor a better thermal connection will be made? I do have a Corsair H150 Elite water cooler so I would think it’d do better even with an i9 4900k.

In the meantime, I finally got a response from Gigabyte and they referred me to an article in which another person having a crash problem with handbrake solved his by installing the correct version of .NET. I don’t believe that is my problem since I’d expect I would have gotten a better error message and the fact that handbrake did seem to work under certain conditions. But I’ll verify once I get my machine back.

Thanks to those who continue to follow this thread in support.

The handbrake engine is written in c, Not .net so installing it will have no effect on encodes. Only the UI layer is .Net and since that is working, it rules that out.

Id note also that taming a 14900k can be hard. Especially on motherboards that have high power limits and high time limits for the higher power states

Even with water cooling don’t be surprised to see spikes of 100c. It’s designed to run as hard as possible. Efficiency be damned.

Update. I finally got my machine back today with a brand new i9 CPU installed. After crossing my fingers and sprinkling holy water on the outside, my preliminary tests seem to indicate that handbrake is once again working for me! Yay! I ran the same job that was failing almost immediately before, but this time it ran to completion with no errors! (I wonder if the reason the service manager at Microcenter was so quick to agree to a new CPU meant they have been having problems with it?)

I monitored the handbrake job with HWInfo while it was running and it still looked like it was spending a lot of time at or near 100C, but at least this first significant test worked! I will run more thorough tests tomorrow, but for now I will sleep VERY well tonight. I will provide another update tomorrow after my more complete testing. I hope it will be my final update on this problem.

In the meantime, I cannot thank all of you enough for the great support, insight, and advice you've provided!!! You're the best! Cheers!

P.S. Any advice for keeping this beast cool?

A good AIO might give you lower temperatures, it depends on the motherboard. Those cpu's are made to turbo as much as they can and only stop when hit the limits. In terms of temperature is 100º, then there's how much power the motherboard can provide. You might buy a better cooler but if the motherboard can still provide more power, the cpu will take the lower temps from the new cooler in order to turbo even more until it reaches 100º again or hits the power limit, whatever comes first.

I actually have what I thought was a pretty decent AIO water cooler (Corsair H150 Elite), but it still seemed like the system was generating more heat than I would expect. The radiator is in the front of the Fractal case with three fans on the front side of the radiator. I had been monitoring with HWinfo which showed some high temps but it also felt physically warm given that I place the chassis under my desk and I could literally feel the warmth more so than I had with my previous Threadripper system.

I started looking at the cooling a little more closely. In addition to the three high quality fans in the front of the chassis, there is also a large fan in the back. When I checked the airflow, I noticed the fans in the front had been configured to push air out while the fan in the back was also pushing out. There is some ventilation on top of and bottom of case, but that installation just seemed plain wrong to me which was corroborated when I did some internet sleuthing. I opened up the box and reinstalled the front fans so they are drawing cold air INTO the box instead of blowing air OUT in order to have a proper air flow. I suspect the builder did it this way because the wire on the front fans were in a weird spot and instead of using a different fan, he simply turned the fan over. As a result, I think the technician had put these front three fans in backwards!

I retested after reconfiguring the fans and my general sense is the CPU is running cooler now. That certainly is the case in the front of the box. I'm just going to have to give it a little more room in the cubby hole under my desk so the heat has somewhere to go. Based on my testing, handbrake still seems to work fine with occasional spikes to 100C instead of near constant 100C processing. I wonder if this airflow mistake is what contributed to the demise of the processor? At least Microcenter was nice enough to replace it.

Bottom line, whether it was a bad processor or bad airflow, I seem to be back to a stable situation with handbrake working 100%. I think we can turn the page on this episode. Thanks again to everyone for helping me work thru this. You've all been incredibly helpful!

Very unlikely. It was more likely a bad cooler mount or something or just a weak chip that wasn't within tolerance.

For a chip that's drawing 250watts into such a small surface area, there is only so much you can do. The laws of physics are becoming a problem.
The only way you can really get sensible temperatures on these chips is underclocking or chilled water loops. Neither of which are particularly practical so I just wouldn't worry about it. These things will run for years without issues.

If the temperatures really bothers you you can always change your motherboard defaults from the manufacturer ones to the intel ones. The cpu voltage will drop a lot and your temperature won't go above the 80's. The only downside with this are the lower boost clock speeds.
For gaming this won't make a big difference. For encoding you might get longer encode times but i don't think the difference will be big.
I don't usually watch this guy's videos but he explains it fairly well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s43Auv8ub7w
Give it a try and see if performance loss bothers you.
