Doesn't seem to be working

Description of problem or question:
No Status Bar or Preview Window. I started my first project. I set all of the options and clicked on Start Encoding. Nothing seems to be happening. There is no Status Bar and nothing opens if I click on Activity. I checked in my Library at the location that the Activity Logs should be and there is nothing. If I click on Stop, I get a warning that "You are currently encoding. What would you like to do?". I read where it does take some time but how do I know anything is happening?

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
