Help with preset for my particular setup.

Post by DeepOvertone »

Description of problem or question:

I'm sorry if this kind of question is generally looked down upon via this community. I've tried google so I'm coming to the masters for help. I'm not familiar with all of the settings and vernacular so please bear with me.

What I'm looking for is the "best" settings to use for my current goals. In no particular order they are 1. Faster encoding, 2. Lower file size, and 3. Best visual quality. I know that's typically a pick 2 out of 3 situation so if I had to give one up it would be faster encoding. But, if theres a way to speed up my encoding over what I'm currently doing, without sacrificing lower file size and quality, I'd like to know.

All machine specs are listed below and for reference my workflow is bluray through Make MKV, and then to handbrake.

I'm currently using H.265(video toolbox), peak framerate, 30fps, average bitrate set to 6000. I don't even remember where I got those numbers so they could be all wrong and I'd have no idea. Any help would be appreciated!!

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

I'm using 1.6.1 for Mac OS

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Running on Ventura 13.1. The Machine is an iMac with a 4.2ghz quad core i7 (Kaby lake) with a Radeon Pro 575 (4gb) video card.
The devices I'm playing on are Apple TVs. I have 1 Apple TV HD, and a couple 1st generation 4k models. I plan to get the 3rd gens at some point.

My home theater setup is nothing crazy. Audio is simple 5.1 and the TV is a decent 4K Samsung.

Post an encode log, not just the scan log.

If you are indeed using VideoToolBox, you're not going to get any faster. But VideoToolBox is forcing lower quality for size than you can get with the software encoders. So you really need to think about your priorities, because improving quality and size is going to require a way slower encode.

Slower may be fine. Can you give me some direction on how to switch things up? Also, how to go about speeding up the encode once I move away from video toolbox? The good thing is that I sort of work in IT and have access to a bunch of hardware. Is core count better or should I look for something with more speed? If I remember right, core count is king and I can pretty easily get my hands on some nice xeon chips with high core count. I may just build myself an encoding machine if I can get similar or better speeds with better quality by upping the hardware side.

I'll look into an encode log today. I will be at work encoding on a different machine but with the same preset.

Choose the x265 encoder, try a few encoder presets to see what speed you're happy with, and then try some different RF targets to see what quality/size you're happy with.
