VideoToolBox H265 vs X265

Description of problem or question:
I have been using an M1 Mac Mini to compress blu-ray mkvs.
I have been using a X265 lately. I had an error with one file and came to site and saw mention of VideoToolBox, so I read the faq and decided to try it.
VideoToolBox is massively faster.
Here are my settings: (both: mkv, frame rate: same as source, tune: none, level: auto)
X265 H265 10bit 20RF, slower, 15-20fps, generally over 2 hours to complete.
VideoToolBox H265 10bit, 20 CQ, quality preset, 250fps, about 12mins.
this test is with no filters, but I do use Denoise: HQDN3D Medium to reduce files size on grainy videos regularly.

My question is, what if any are the quality differences or anything I need to be aware of?
why wouldn't all Mac users use videotoolbox?
is there a reason why there are no presets made for videotoolbox?

I quickly looked at parts of the test video and it looks near perfect to me.

thanks to all the devs that make handbrake!!!

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
use VideoToolBox H265 10bit

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.6.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

macOS 12.6.3

You are trading quality and/or size for speed.

If you’re happy with the results stick with it.

Quality setting 20 is wildly different on these two encoders; your outputs aren't the same quality or size.

ok, if they don't match quality, what settings in x265 RF 20, slower, would match settings for videotoolbox?

I don't know of any universal rule, you'll need to do a bit of experimentation to see where they look about the same to you.

when VideoToolbox 10bit H265 gets an average of 6mb/s, should that be the same as x265 10bit at 6mb/s?

There seems to be discrepancies in Handbrakes VideoToolbox quality setting.
The help text for VideoToolbox and x264/5 are the same referencing RF when you hover over the slider. x264/5 uses RF for the quality slider, but VideoToolbox uses CQ for the quality slider. RF uses lower number for high the quality, but VideoToolbox uses a higher number for higher quality.
Devs do you know about this? Is there a reason?

Depends on the x265 encoder preset.

Veryfast may be similar, veryslow won't be.
