Re: slow encoding. seems like cpu, not gpu working

Post by s55 »

It's working fine. Your CPU is too slow to feed QuickSync with the settings your using.

Given your source is 4K, it probably isn't going to be interlaced. If it's not, turn off the Decomb/Interlacte detection filters on the filters tab. That will help a bit.

Ultimately though, your CPU is too weak to decode 4K quickly, so the QuickSync Encoder is waiting for it to send it the data to encode.

hi. but i am choosing h264 nvenc on video tab to encode, not QuickSync Encoder.
and my cpu can decode 4k 60fps almost at full speed. less than 60fps, but surely more than 7.2fps.

what i was trying to get gpu encoding to work. there is a note in the faq that if h264 nvenc not supported, than it is not avilable on video tab. and it is avilable for me. and i see on external pcdisplay that gpu is not in use.

QuickSync is hardware encoding.

Your log shows that you are not selecting NVEnc

[14:05:53] + encoder: H.264 (Intel Media SDK)

9-series Nvidia GPU's have never been formally supported by HandBrake so if you do try select it, I'm not sure if it'll even work. EIther way, for this generation of hardware, QuickSync is the better choice.

Code: Select all

and my cpu can decode 4k 60fps almost at full speed. less than 60fps, but surely more than 7.2fps.
You'll probably find it was the Nvidia GPU doing the decoding, not the CPU.

That CPU most defiantly cannot run 4K decode, Decomb, Interlace Detect, Audio encode, AV/SYNC at the same time and achieve 60fps.

Either way, try dropping those filters I suggested. That's about all you can do but don't expect any miracles here.

yes you are right, i forget it was a gpu decoder.

ok so now i somehow getting average encoding speed for job is 19.535265 fps. was it gpu?

It's still heavily bottlenecked but there isn't anything more you can do about that.

The CPU still has to decode the video, Run HandBrakes A/V Sync engine, handle cropping and scaling , manage the Audio passthru etc whilst passing the data onto Quick Sync for encoding.

I wouldn't bother with NVEnc on that system. 1st generation NVEnc s horrible. QuickSync is also hardware encoding and in that generation, just all round better.

but QuickSync was more then twice times slower. and using all cpu 100%. why is it better?

Try quicksync without the filters like you did with the nvenc and see if that speeds anything up.

Quicksync may also be better for quality and/or bitrate.

Better output quality, slightly smaller filesizes.

Try quicksync, but with the filters turned off.

Your logs show:
7.2FPS quickSync + Filters
19.5fps nvenc (no filters)

That's not a fair comparison. The filters were significantly slowing the first encode.

Both QuickSync and NVEnc are capable of 100+fps under normal circumstances. So, in theory, there should be little speed differences on your system since both are heavily bottlenecked and probably only using ~5% of their capacity due to that really weak CPU.

CPU usage is perfectly normal. Only the encoding is run on the discrete hardware. Everything else has to run on the CPU.

hi. what if i have 1060 gtx and your latest software? should i still don't use nvenc ?

I was using QuickSync for my videos but found it too slow so I purchased a 3060 thinking that I could use a capable GPU to encode at faster speeds, but it seems that Handbrake doesn't use discrete graphics at all because the encode speeds are almost identical. Even with NVEC selected, there's no change and my GPU fans sit idle. Not sure what the problem is since I use Topaz Labs' Video Enhancer and that chews through upscale encodes using the GPU.

Have a read though the posts in this thread. You may find a clue. Failing that start your own thread and include an encode log.
