50fps / Format Profile High@L4.2 always fails

Post by SmilingMoose »

Description of problem or question:
When I attempt to encode an H264/AVC file that is 50fps with a profile of High@L4.2, it always fails. I'm using H265 as the encoder and keeping the framerate the same as source.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
Doing it with a similar file. It does NOT happen with a file that's at 25 or 30fps. Or with a different profile.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.51

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
macOS 12.3.1

The H.265 level you set doesn't support 50 fps at that resolution. When in doubt, set the level to auto.

Thanks for the reply. Auto? Where. All I see is the dropdown menu. I leave the framerate as "Same as source." If you could direct me to Auto or a command line... Realized I also have an issue with some 4K (3840) files at 23.976fps. Tried a bunch of different frame rates there to no avail.

Thank you again

The frame rate is ok, but below it there is another dropdown menu called "Level", you need to set this to "auto".

Aha! Never touched that because I didn't know what it did. It worked. Assuming leaving it at 4.0 conflicted with the attempt to transcode based on the source file? Is that level setting related to the format profile level in the file?

The 4K files I mentioned didn't work with putting Level at auto, but when I put both Profile and Level at auto, it seems to work, but slower than usual (@ 8fps). But...it's worked. Thank you.

Yes, each level specifies a constraint, the highest resolution at the highest Framerate supported.
You probably started with a built-in preset, that uses x264 and set a level. At the moment HandBrake doesn't check if the level are supported when changing codec and resolution so it needs to be done manually.
