Job / Encode Fail

Post by HD MOVIE SOURCE »

Hi,

I wonder if you could help me, I'm trying to understand why my encode failed. On my encoding PC, I only have 8GB of ram. I'm thinking that's the reason. This morning I just added another 8GB and will re-encode and see, but here's the report. I just wondered if anyone could spot anything that doesn't look right.

This encode was done with Process Isolation turned on, I'm testing another encode now just to see if it could be that or a lack of memory. I'm not sure. If anyone can spot the cause please let me know because I was 5 days into this encode.

Can you encode it with sane settings that don’t take 5+ days?

4K UHD encoded at RF 0 is a bit nuts.

Thinking about it, why are you encoding this file?

RF 0 is indeed way overkill and the output will be much larger than the source (if you don't run out of disk space first!).

I'm encoding this file because Dango 4K UHD Blu-ray is the best example of resolving film grain I've seen, and I wanted to encode a movie and have it look visually equal (if possible). I'm also learning how to encode with the restrictions of uhd-bd=1. I've been testing this on open source content and have had excellent results.
Rodeo wrote: Thu Oct 06, 2022 7:38 pm RF 0 is indeed way overkill and the output will be much larger than the source (if you don't run out of disk space first!).
It can be if you don't place bit-rate control in the code. If you've read the docs (https://x265.readthedocs.io/en/3.4/cli.html) you see that using vbv-maxrate & vbv-bufsize is still applicable. Maxrate turns into something similar that you'd use for a 2-pass encode, average bit-rate. And Buffsize essentially turns into maxrate, similar to a 2-pass encode.

So, using vbv-maxrate=98000:vbv-bufsize=99000 for example means the average bit-rate is targeting 98Mbps, which is what I target for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. 4K Blu-ray cannot go higher than 100 Mbps, but it can burst higher in scene changes, so having enough buffer is good. I've found that 99 Mbps is fine for the bufsize.

The reason I use CRF 0 is that anything under my target bit-rate is pretty much visually lossless. One issue I have with most 4K encodes, and definitely, Blu-ray encodes, is that when under low bit-rate conditions film grain integrity is lost. When you use CRF 0, I've seen that parts of the video that go as low as 25 Mbps look better than when using a 2-pass encode. Another thing is that CRF (from what I've seen) doesn't waste bits. I had my friend encode some content at 100 Mbps using a 2-pass encode. I used my settings and used CRF = 0 with my bit-rate cap, and my encode looked better and saved 1GB of space. His was a 4 GB video and mine was a 3GB video. My QP was also lower (lower is higher quality).

I'm just having fun with it, but I do agree that I've hit the ceiling on what can be done with my encoding PC. I am dialing back a few settings, and I'm aiming for a 2 to 3 day encode. I've also upgraded my RAM to 16 GB and turned off process isolation. So far, so good, I'm about 25% into another encode now and Handbrake hasn't randomly crashed.

I didn’t see any grain filter in your log?

It seems like you are going through a ridiculous amount of energy to remove grain, that I imagine in this case the director put in on purpose.

You be you and all, but it just seems a bit odd. :D

Do you have a log for a successful encode of a 4K UHD source using these settings?

Hi, I fixed the issue, seemed to be a memory problem. I upgraded my memory and now I have no issues. I'm not removing any grain, I'm retaining grain, well, that's the goal.

This is my encode settings from a trailer that I encoded, it's not a full movie but went through perfectly. I tested Django again and it encoded very nicely with no issues now I have more memory.

The average bit-rate is 97.5 Mbps.
