in the context of handbrake, what is a file format?

what is a file format in the context of handbrake? like what does the program mean file format? what is it talking about?


Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

when i'm in handbrakes front page and it says "format" and it says MPEG-4 or Matroska or webm what is it talking about what are all these options and what do they mean?
