PC Specs for Handbrake 1080p Encoding

Hi All,

I am new to this community and would very much appreciate some guidance and help if possible please.

I'm about to start transferring all my Blu-ray movies, which is an extensive collection, onto my Plex server, and therefore will be encoding all my movies in 1080p x265 (10-bit) with no filters, audio pass thru, CF 18 and encoder preset at Medium.

My current PC is not up to the task, it is from around 2005, Intel (Duo) Quad Core 2.4ghz with 8gb RAM and only a very basic GPU. When I attempt the above it just says it will take 12 hours or something similar, maybe longer it fluctuated a lot.

I am as most people, on a very tight budget and am looking to buy a used PC just for encoding. My aim is to be able to do the above, based on a 2 hour movie, in no more than 3 hours, less if possible.

Please advise what you think might be the minimum specs to achieve this and do you think a Dell Optiplex 7010 MT Intel Core i7-3770, 16GB RAM would manage this or is that still under powered?

Thanks for the link rollin_eng. Not sure if this is intended for myself, however benchmarking my old system will not answer my question as to what hardware might be appropriate for my current needs as outlined above?

x265 doesn't make sense for 1080p RF18 over x264 at the same encoding speed.

I have one final question, which of the following system specs is likely to perform best with handbrake please, I can't decide which option to go for:

i7-11800H (8 Cores/16 Threads 24M Cache, up to 4.60 GHz) [laptop version]
Nvidia RTX 3070 (GDDR6 8GB) [laptop version]
32gb DDR4 Dual Channel

OR

i9-12900H (14 Cores/20 Threads 24M Cache, up to 5.00 GHz) [laptop version]
Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics
64gb DDR4 Dual Channel

In theory the i9 would be better.

I was unsure as I didn't know how much of a boost the RTX 3070 would give HB.

RTX 3070 doesn't boost software encoding at all.

NVEnc on the 3070 is a discrete encoder that supports H.264/5
Iris Xe also has discrete H.264/5 encoders on it.

Both are pretty fast but if your using software encoding, it's a moot point.

Personally I'd go for a 12th gen but You could probably save a few $£ by going for a 12700H. The 12900H is one of these chips that tends to cost a fair bit extra for very little performance increase over the step down.

Thank you for all the help and advice. I have now ordered the i9-12900H with Iris XE, it is due for delivery end of November 2022.

As soon as I have it, I will perform some benchmarks and post, so other users can compare.
