Preserve Dolby Vision ?

Post by marsias »

Hello.

I have more *.mkv 4k remux files which are about 80GB each.
All video tracks are in dolby vision.

Which settings can i use to convert the files in a smaller size BUT to preserve the dolby Vision.

(I have tried with Profile:main, L 5.1 but the dolby vision is gone)

thnx

I don’t think Dolby Vision is supported.

Now that Dolby Vision has been implemented, do I need to enable it in HandBrake so my encodes have it?

It's automatic, but the only encoder supporting it is x265 10bit.

Which would totally be fine for my use case as that is the encoder that I use for shrinking my backups.
Weird though. I would have thought that it would be the 12bit x265 encoder that would be supporting it since, if I understand correctly, DV bit depth is 12bit?

I shrunk the movie 1917 after the update using the x265 12bit encoder and the result did not show dolby vision in the Media Info data. I'll try again using the 10bit x265 encoder. Or is it that the DV tag will not show in Media Info?? The original rip from MakeMKV shows it so just assumed that the shrink would as well.

It requires x265 10-bit. DV tone mapper might use an higher precision internally, and if there is a full enhancement layer. But currently only the base layer is supported in HandBrake, and x265 supports Dolby Vision only in the 10-bit encoder.

thanks for that info. I'm re-encoding now and will confirm in a couple hours.

So no dice on the DV being in the Handbrake output based on MediaInfo output

You're using HandBrake 1.6.1, support for Dolby Vision is only available in snapshot builds and eventually in HandBrake 1.7.0 ;-)

ah, okay. Well, shoot. I was hoping that wasn't the case even though I thought it might be. Guess i'll just have to wait then.

I tend to shy away from the alpha builds, but i'm really interested in having DV support so I just may have to give it a go.

Is anyone able to play a DV rip with Atmos? If so, what Handbrake settings are you using and what platform are you playing on?

I've tried multiple rips - MKVs and MP4s - with Nightly 20230514145015-2d795553c-master (2023051501). The ripped files show DV profile 8.1.

The only file that seems to play DV on my LG C9 TV is an MP4 and it doesn't play Atmos. I need to plug the file directly into the TV's USB port and use the TV's media player.

I've read that Plex on NVIDIA Shield is one of the only platforms that currently plays MKVs and MP4s. However, I don't have a Shield (yet).

I know, quite a late reply but the answer is:
Yes. My recommendations?
Encode the video track in HB with settings matching the original material you want to encode (HD; FHD; UHD; etc).
Do not encode audio or subs or anything else, just the video!
After encoding has finished, just use "mkvtoolnixgui.exe" to mux your new encoded video track into a mkv-container and copy all the rest (original audio, subs, chapters, etc) into that (including your Atmos 7.1 audio track).

The result: Only your video track was encoded, so you only lose quality there (but that is intended). Audio and all the rest is not encoded and was just copied over for maximum quality.
Works 100% of the time for me. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

On all platforms that support the codec.
My PC supports it and my Audio/Video-Receiver (AVR) (Denon) supports it.
Kodi has a problem to just pass-through the Atmos signal to the AVR but that is a complicated topic for another thread.

If your Receiver (or PC) does not support it, you might have to downgrade (encode) your Atmos track to a simple 5.1 dts audio track (Handbrake is good at that as well).
Check your hardware specifications if you aren't sure if Atmos is supported in your case or just go ahead and test it.
If you have to downgrade your audio you could still keep the original Atmos track (even in the same mkv container as all the rest), in case you can play it in a few years with new hardware. But that is up to you of course and your disk space capabilities.

"On all platforms that support the codec" is a broad statement. Many platforms support MKVs. Many platforms support DV. Many platforms support Atmos. It's the combination I am asking about - i.e. What Handbrake settings on which specific platforms are providing Dolby Vision and Atmos?

Well, I can't really get more specific than that because it simply is the truth. But as a rule of thumb: if your AVR supports Dolby Vision, it normally supports Dolby Atmos and vice versa (although there are exceptions to that).

Let's try it another way:
Video:
You are talking about Dolby Vision, that means at least 10 (if not even 12 bit) inside your video track. As of today that is not quite common yet but will be in the future.
That means wherever you want to watch that Dolby Vision video track, it needs to be decoded by the hardware.
On your PC it would be your GPU (or CPU) and in your living room it might be the AVR. On your mobile phone it is the onboard chip and so on.

I can't list all the hardware capable of decoding 10 or even 12 bit. So it is up to you to find out what your hardware is capable of.
There are many AVRs and TV screens out there capable of decoding Dolby Vision but if your screen/AVR is one of them, I can't tell.

Audio:
You are talking about Dolby Atmos (=8 or more channels), that means more than 5.1 (=6 channels) inside your audio track. As of today that is not quite common yet but will be in the future.
That means wherever you want to hear that Dolby Atmos audio track, it needs to be decoded by the hardware.
On your PC it would be your sound processor (or CPU) and in your living room it might be the AVR. On your mobile phone it is the onboard chip and so on.

I can't list all the hardware capable of decoding Dolby Atmos with more than 6 channels. So it is up to you to find out what your hardware is capable of.

Oh and the best combination/platform to watch movies on still remains in 2023:
PC -> (AVR) -> TV/Speakers (in that order)
since you are very flexible with that setup. You can easily update a PC (software or hardware) making new codecs playable in the future (either video or audio codecs).
But I guess that is for enthusiasts only. If you want to stick to Smart TVs only that is fine, too. But then you got to replace your whole TV if a new fancy codec comes along.
