Re: Intel I7 12700 is not using all cores

Post by s55 »

Couple questions for you since we don't have alderlake to hand to test this.

1. Does it make any difference if HandBrake is the foreground app?
2. If you change "Preferences -> Advanced -> Priority Level:" to "Normal" does it make any difference?
3. Does it make any difference if you use the "Max Performance" Windows Power Profile?
4. If you turn off Process Isolation in "Preferences -> Advanced" does that help? (does it help in combination of 1, 2)?

Thanks

TLDR, Many apps are getting caught out by Big.Little and the Windows scheduler not being as Smart as advertised. It should infact be using the performance codes but it seems Windows is deliberately slowing us down.

1. Does it make any difference if HandBrake is the foreground app?
No it the same

2. If you change "Preferences -> Advanced -> Priority Level:" to "Normal" does it make any difference?
No still the same

3. Does it make any difference if you use the "Max Performance" Windows Power Profile?
No again the same

4. If you turn off Process Isolation in "Preferences -> Advanced" does that help? (does it help in combination of 1, 2)?
Yes now its runnung on the first 8 cores and the strange thing is that 4 cores are running at half speed.... and the Effiency cores dont run at all
Below is a picture of taskmanager, thanks for helping!

In this particular case, since a developer is already on it, maybe waiting for another question/suggestion from s55 makes more sense ;-)

Sure, and I have very little doubt that it's a software issue however we have no idea what settings are being used.

In all likely hood, this is going to need OS updates to "fix" but I'm going to ping some friends at Intel to get some thoughts.

It could be that Windows 10 and Alderlake is just not optimal for scheduling this type of workload.

I don't have access to alderlake yet to do any testing on it, but the E-Cores could actually cause bottlenecks when paired with the P-Cores depending on what threads get scheduled onto them. I'm honestly not sure but I could see that being a risk so P-Core only might not be a bad thing.

Thank you for all the help! I really bought this platform for speeding up Handbrake.
In theory it should be at least twice ase fast as my I7 9700 K
I hope this can be solved!

Ok i did a upgrade to Windows 11 for testing (reverted back to Windows 10). But same thing only a bit better.

Isolation OFF
https://gforce1.org/HB-Win11-Isolation%20Off.JPG

Isolation ON
https://gforce1.org/HB-Win11-Isolation%20ON.JPG

With Isolation on its way better but still not using 100 procent.

Couple of points.

- Don't expect 100% CPU utilisation. 24 Threads is quite a lot and video encoding doesn't scale infinitely. You get diminishing returns after 6~8 cores for each core you add there after. It will vary of course with settings and source content. Sometimes you'll max out, sometimes you won't. With 1080p content I'd say it's less likely.

- HandBrake isn't Big/Little aware and I don't think any of the underlying libraries we use yet are either. So it could be some time before optimisations are made for these new style architectures. (Assuming anything can actually be done)

- It does look like there is some odd scheduling behaviour in Windows now. Your Last screenshot looks like it's working correctly there. I think the lack of 100% is just it hitting a scaling bottleneck although I could be wrong.

There isn't much more you can do but it looks like W11 is the best option short term.

I've pinged some contacts on the issue and we'll see if there are any easy wins. Bare in mind this is a new architecture and it often takes time for software and in this case, also Windows, to play catchup.

All you're doing on the CPU is the filtering, your encode is on the hardware encoder on your video card, thus low CPU usage.

Nope, on my I7 9700K it was fully using all the cores at 100 percent and was bottleneck.....

You were probably using different settings previously. If you use the x265 encoder you might see your CPU usage increase.

If you use the x265 encoder does it use all your CPU?

Could you please post your log for this encode.
