Re: Windows 10 entirely freezes when encoding

Post by s55 »

System freezes are one of a couple possibilities and are not uncommon when running demanding apps like HandBrake.

1. CPU Temperatures getting too high. Usually modern chips throttle but I'm not sure how the older FX series behaves. Worth monitoring.
2. Unstable power resulting in system crashes. Use something like HWMonitor to keep an eye on them. Would work for point 1 as well.
3. Bad Memory (Run MemTest86)
4. Broken Drivers although I'd usually expect a blue screen rather than a freeze, freezing is still possible.

When changing to Mpeg-2 -> Mpeg-2 (instead of H.264), it does not freeze.

CPU is water cooled. PSU is oversized. Memory or drivers is left. Thanks.

Mpeg2 is much much lighter on the CPU.

Also, check your temps anyway. Water cooling is great but with time can have issues.
Same with the PSU, it's not necessarily an amount of power, but the quality of power and the stability of the power rails.

HWMonitor installed: Cores are reporting 40-59°C, depending on loading. Lowest chassis temp is 32°C.

3.3v bus is 3.28-3.31v. 5v bus is 5.802-5.844v. 12v bus is 12.584v-12.936v. Some variation, but not a lot.
CPU CORE, VIN2 and VIN3 are all rock solid.

12 and 5V rails are both a fair bit outside the ATX spec but it could just be a bad reading from the motherboard. it's the sort of thing you'd need a good multi-meter and oscilloscope to confirm unfortunately. If you happen to have another supply to hand, it's maybe worth testing if that's something your comfortable with.

Max Temp for the FX is (oddly), listed as 57C https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/fx-9370
I don't think that would be an issue though

Difficult to say for sure but it's probably going to require some experimenting. HandBrake is running in user space so can't cause a feeze/crash like this.

Thanks. Not water cooled as I recalled. That is my work machine. This one has heat pipes. Still need to run memory check. Assume I will be gone for a while, and let this rest.

Review shows this CPU:
1) must have water cooling, because it draws 220w.
2) must have 1000w power supply. (I have 750w.)

I had recently put in an RTX2060plus. HWMonitor shows some internal temps dropping to near 0°C at "no load", impossible in my house, so calibration is off.

New water cooler and power supply on the way.
