Only half of dual layer dvd gets ripped

Post by timmy10 »

Description of problem or question:
Only half of a dual layer movie gets ripped. This is repeatable.
Movie is Clear And Present Danger. Handbrake detects a 02:21:05 first part and a 00:02:37 second part. It creates a 01:07:41 first part and a 00:02:37 second part. The first part is the first 1:07:41 of the movie with good sound and video. The second part is a movie trailer.

Handbrake does not report any error on the gui, it just finishes normally.

The complete dvd plays okay via VLC Media Player.

Over the last few weeks I successfully ripped over 100 dvds and this is the only dvd that has had any issue. But I am new to this and have no idea how to interpret the log file below.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
Try to rip the dvd using Fast 1080p 30 setting.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.3.1 and 1.3.2 give the exact same results.

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10

The old DVDShrink is best for ripping dual layer.

Google DVDshrink (as I have no idea about this stuff), downloaded DVD Shrink 3.2 and it [Censored] about....
"DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Failed to read 'D:\' Data error (cyclic redundancy check)."

This feedback along with the "Read Errror, Error reading from DVD." in the handbrake logs leads me to believe that this disk causes these programs to falsely error out.

VLC Media Player plays the whole movie with no problems...

Then try ISOBuster (also old) to see if you can reclaim anything.

Basically, your laser isn't able to change focus to read the second layer of the disk. If cleaning the laser doesn't help, you probably should be a new drive.

Dual-layer disks are also very fussy about any chemical contamination, which can affect the focus, so cleaning the disk can help. ANYTHING that makes it hard for the focus change will stop the read of a DL disk, mid-rip.

But then how does VLC play the whole movie fine (presumably repeatably)? I'm not following why this is necessarily a layer problem…

In any case, it does seem like HandBrake is having a really hard time reading this discs (whether it's due to the disc or the drive, I can't tell). You could always try MakeMKV, see if it fares any better?

Decoding for realtime playback and unpacking a stream to raw bits for recoding are two entirely different things.
A is dirty and can survive stream errors in varying degrees, B must be clean, almost perfectly so. Every nonlinear encoder on earth works this way, so please don't implicate Handbrake by singling it out...

Thanks for the quick feedback.

I claim the drive should be okay as VLC media can read the disk.

But.... I installed HB on another machine and was able to rip the complete movie.

The second machine is an exact duplicate of the first machine.

Seems odd but I have a workaround . Thanks.
