Post by KaraokeAmerica » Wed Jun 06, 2018 2:26 am

Description of problem or question:
Handbrake won't scan Blu-Ray disk. It fails simply on the disk scan.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
Try to scan disk source. That's it.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.1.0

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Win10 with Creators and April 2018 updates.

Yup, HB doesn't support protected disks.

Rip with an app for that purpose, like MakeMKV.

Thank you, but I don't think that's it. The disk isn't encrypted from HB's standpoint. I am running AnyDVD-HD.

CloneBD doesn't rip encrypted disks either, but it worked fine here. Until I updated HB to the latest version yesterday it would rip *decrypted* disks all day.

Are you saying that HB has been "updated" to ignore *decrypted* disks?

FTR, I'm currently ripping another "encrypted" disk in a second system with the same version of Handbrake. It is working fine so far.

I am also currently ripping that disk that failed into a decrypted ISO and I'm going to try it again on THAT system to see what happens, but direct from ISO instead of the physical disk.

HB isn't intended to rip disks. Use the right tool for the job.

I've updated my comment to reflect non-encryption forms of copy protection.

Are your other "work all day" decrypted disks also using MPEG2 for the video encoding? That in itself is rare for a Bluray source, because that codec is usually used for DVD. And the fact that the aspect ratio can't be determined makes the stream "invalid" to handbrake.

Thank you oh captain of the Battlestar Pedantica.......;)

Not sure what you mean by "rip disks". I may be using the wrong term, but I "rip" movies all the time in Handbrake.

Would it make more sense if I said "transcode"? lol

If you would like to try the next nightly build, I just pushed a workaround for the "unknown aspect" (https://git.io/vh0Vt). You may still end up with a video encoded to the incorrect aspect. The workaround also logs the unknown value, so it would be helpful if you could run the next nightly and post a log. I'm curious what value it's using.

Thank you. This actually makes more sense. It is using an odd stream? Frankly, I have no idea what type of source my disks are. Unless there is an issue with one, I don't even look at the logs. I don't look at my TV remote either unless it doesn't work as expected.

Thing is that if it was about the TYPE of stream wouldn't it fail on transcoding, not simply trying to trying to scan the disk? Are you saying that because of this encoding, it sees *NO TITLES*?

I won't pretend I'm an expert here.....

I would be happy to test it! I'll start it now if I could figure out how to actually download the installer from that link!

Do I need some sort of GitHub account or something? I don't know how that works.

Woodstock's point wasn't so much about the type of stream. It was more about it being unusual. The fact that it's unusual means that whoever produced this disc doesn't use the same tools as most everybody else. The production tool they used is broken because it produced a disc that does not conform to spec.

The reason the scan fails isn't due to the fact that it's MPEG. It's due to the unknown aspect ratio. Without this information, HandBrake has no way to know what width the video should be rendered at. My workaround basically picks the most commonly used aspect ratio and allows the scan to succeed instead of fail. But this somewhat arbitrary choice for aspect would cause improper rendering if the disc is actually some other aspect ratio.

"Nightly builds" are produced approximately nightly :P (sometimes there are missed nights) and can be found here: https://handbrake.fr/nightly.php

The current nightly build does not have this workaround yet, so you need to wait for the next one. Anything with a date (in the filename) after 20180603

Got it, thanks.

OK, I understand that. I'll check tomorrow to see if there is a new build.

The issue I see with your "workaround" method is one that I brought up in a thread last year some time. You are unable to really do anything until it sees and scans a source. The hiccup for me was that I couldn't even put in my output path until it scanned the source. It was just annoying. Or, do you mean the "workaround" is something you are putting in the next nightly build?

Thanks for the help!

OK, I finally got a chance to try this. It did work. Thanks!

Can you post a log of a scan of this disc with the nightly. It logs additional information about the aspect ratio code that I would like to see.
