Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
nc guide sir.
i have a question ~ the "burn in" option seems to work with all my other video files but not with one video
and i checked what's their difference and found that it works with text/ssa or text/ass ~ but when i try to hardsub the "video" with the text/utf8 srt file it becomes soft subbed and when i try it with the output mp4 it does not show at all ~ help pls.

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
I'm slowly ripping all my DVD's to a Streaming Media Player attached to my TV, and I noticed when I got to this movie in the R's; nothing I did would imprint the subs into the video. When Hopkin's is speaking to the devil in Italian, it wouldn't show up, but after several tries I decided to look at the VobSub and there were two in English. The second Vobsub was strictly the non English forced subs, so to get it to burn to the screen, I selected that subtitle and checked default and burn in and all went well.
Just an FYI if anyone else is pulling their hair trying to figure out why the forced subs from a DVD is being cut out.

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
I'm encoding all my DVD library to a NAS setup in mp4 format streaming via XBMC on ATV2. I have noticed that some movies have the subtitles burned in already (Hulk, Avatar) so if I select Foreign Audio Search then check forced, burn in and default will this create subtitles over subtitles?
Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
No. When the subtitles are already burned in, there is no "forced" subtitle track, thus Foreign Audio Search won't find any and nothing will get burned in.i228 wrote:I have noticed that some movies have the subtitles burned in already (Hulk, Avatar) so if I select Foreign Audio Search then check forced, burn in and default will this create subtitles over subtitles?
Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
Hi,
I'm still trying to get my subtitles properly encoded from an SRT file...
There is no subtitles displaying in my output video (but I get the subtitle track visible in playing options, thus empty...)
can somebody tell how to properly do it ?
Thomas

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
If you are trying to "BURN IN" SRT subs, this is not supported.
If you are not, you will need to give more details on your target device and LOGS!!!

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
OK,
I don't want 'burned in' sub, only an optional track (closed captioning) I can activate on iPhone/iPad or even VLC
Here is an exemple.
Source my input file is always an mastroska MKV file (merged using mkvmerge from differents source files) which containes a lot of tracks and i expect to have a resulting file with 1 audio tracks and 1 or 2 sub tracks
Source file (Friends.With.Kids.mkv, 2.58GB) :
1 video (h264)
4 audio : AC3(EN), AAC(EN), AC3 (FR), MP3(FR)
6 SRT/TXT sub tracks
1 VOBSUB sub track
I open Handbrake (I'm using 0.9.8 (2012071700) for Windows XP,32b) , drag'n drop the file and choose:
Presets "iPhone 4", Container "MP4 File", unchek 'Large file size"
Audio tab: 1 track (AC3/EN) with all defaults
Subtitles tab : 1 track (first one, english in SRT/TXT) displayed as 'English (UTF8)' with No/No/No (Forced/Burned/Default)
Chapters : I uncheck Create chapter markers (I believe on iPhone/iDevice the chapters are overwrtitting any other 'closed captioning')
then 'Start': it took about 2 hours, the resulting is a m4v file : Friends.with.kids.m4v, 1.1GB
in this output file, I have
1 video track
1 audio track (English, stereo)
1 subtritle track "English" but in VLC or on iPhone, no subtitles are displayed, selected or not
Below is the scan log file
and then the log file
and I attach the part of subtitle where Handbrake says there is a problem (I can't see anything wrong):

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
AnyVideoConverter takes whatever VobSub subtitle stream you select and flattens the sucker into the video so it becomes part of the actual picture (like a watermark) in *.mp4 That's the kind of simplified subtitle treatment I wish I could get out of HandBrake. It's all I really need because I'm just looking to have subtitles for English movies where the characters on-screen are speaking a foreign language. For example, in "The Avengers" where the girl is tied to chair for interrogation/torture, the men are Russian and if you watch the DVD, forced subtitles will appear showing the English translation.
It seems to me that HandBrake does a good job of identifying these foreign language subtitles but will only pass them through unchanged in the form of VobSub images which many players are too stupid to fetch out of an m4v file (i.e. Windows Media Player). Also HandBrake seems to habitually include a SubTitle stream which 'MediaInfo' calls "Apple Text". I don't really know if HandBrake is somehow converting the VobSub subtitle into "Apple Text" or not, but for compatibility's sake, it would be nice to OutPut an *.mp4 container with selected SubTitles flattened into the video. This approach ensures compatibility with any device, since if it can play the video at all, those essential SubTitles as part of the images themselves will unquestionably appear.

This feature is already there. It's called "Burnt In"

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
HandBrake is not converting the vobsubs, you'll find that track is for the embedded chapters.GadgetGoober wrote:Also HandBrake seems to habitually include a SubTitle stream which 'MediaInfo' calls "Apple Text". Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
I would like to create a mkv with two audio-tracks and two .srt.
Each subtitle should belong to one of the two audio-tracks, so that they're automatically played with "their" audio-track:
First audio-track - forced subtitle.
Second audio-track - complete subtitle.
Is it possible and if yes, what options do I have to set?
I still don't get the Forced Audio Search / Default / Forced setting.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
Not with HandBrake. Maybe you can adjust the flags with mkvmerge GUI after encoding, but it also depends on what your playback device does with these flags.
Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
ok guys, slight newb to Handbrake here. I got the hand of 99% of it by now but I'm having an issue burning in vob sub files on some anime episodes that I want to play on the ps3 (since ps3 is like the only stinking player that doesn't like soft subs).... I can convert the files just fine and the subs show up but they're uber tiny and they are up in the left hand center of the screen...... here's my encode log and a pic of the result
I read as much as I could and searched a good 10 pages back in forum to see if someone else had this issue so I'm sorry if it's a dupe

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
Burned in means that they are part of the image, and that they will not be selectable.

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
And you can use "Subtitle Edit" to see what the original looks like.
Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
sorry if I didn't make myself clear, yeah I know that they are perma burned in, my problem is that when I play the file with vobsub selectables, the subtitles look normal and show up in the proper place, but when I burn them in with handbrake they show up uber tiny and on the upper left hand corner of the screen (as the picture shows) I'm trying to get them to show up normal size and centered at the bottom like they normally doSmithcraft wrote:Burned in means that they are part of the image, and that they will not be selectable.

What is the original resolution of the MKV? MediaInfo will tell you.

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
I suspect that the original VOBSUBS are composed for SD not HD.
I would inspect them with "Subtitle Edit" and try to track it down.

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide
most likely, you can tell that they look "blown up" on the original MKV (and the blu-ray) with jagged edges. is subtitle edit a feature within handbrake or an external program???? If it's withing handbrake I'm not seeing itGregiBoy wrote:I suspect that the original VOBSUBS are composed for SD not HD.
