Differences MP4 & MKV

Post by Phototaker »

Am I correct if I were to suggest say that the video file for MP4 & MKV are basically the same except that MP4 can be played by more players & that MKV has fewer ways of being played although If you can play it you can have more features like subtitles & chapter points.

If that premise is correct what would happen if I encode to MKV & can't play it as is, could only just change the file extension to MP4 & then have it plays anywhere?

Thanks in advance

And for me the biggest difference is that MKV can contain DTS tracks. That's the deal breaker when it comes to using M4V/MP4 files.

And actually, nowadays more devices play MKV properly than MP4 -- it's only Apple that remains stubbornly in the past.
