Whole computer crashes on 2-pass encodes

Post by Foodlion »

I am on a PC, running 32-bit Vista.

I have been transferring DVD's to my harddrive using both DVD Decrypter and DVDFab in order to convert them for iPod touch.

I have tried converting directly from an individual *.VOB and by transferring the whole DVD to the harddrive and selecting the correct files within the Handbrake GUI.

Here's what happens -
* If I use all the default settings, it converts ok
* If I change the Rf slider even to 19, I am likely to crash
* If I select 2-pass encoding, or 2-pass encode with a turbo first pass, I am likely to crash (768 average bitrate)

I would like to do a 2-pass encode for these files, it looks a lot better when it works.

Now, I say "likely to crash" because about 75% of the attempts crash the computer and 25% do not. The same file (same rip and everything) may crash the computer once and then work if I retry, or it may just crash repeatedly.

When I say "crash" I mean crash hard. Usually it is as if the power cord and battery were yanked out at the same time - the computer is on and then it is utterly and completely off. I have to remove the battery, unplug it, replug it, and re-insert the battery to get it to even recognize a power source again (and I get the same crash if I run the conversion with the battery out of the computer).

Twice it has gone to a normal shutdown state, but it just as abrupt. No "windows is shutting down" or screen flickers or anything, the computer is just on and then suddenly and near-instantaneously it is completely shut down.

I have found a lot of information about the program crashing but haven't seen anyone else with this problem, unless I'm searching for the wrong terms.

Now, I have had the same problem with Videora so I think this problem is bigger than Handbrake. But I'm hoping someone here has a sense of what is going on and how I might correct it.

The crash happens in the second pass and I am left with an incomplete .m4v file when I restart the computer.

Let me know if there are other specific questions you might have. Thanks!

Re: Whole computer crashes on 2-pass encodes

Post by JohnAStebbins »

This kind of hard crash is pretty much always due to faulty hardware or inadequate cooling. Run some stress tests like prime95 and memtest86. Check your cpu temps.
I would like to do a 2-pass encode for these files, it looks a lot better when it works.
This is only true if you are comparing a 1-pass average bitrate encode to a 2 pass average bitrate encode. A 1 pass RF encode will have identical quality to a 2 pass ABR encode if the 2 encodes resulted in the same average bitrate. If file size is not a major concern, it is always better to pick an RF that gives you the quality you want and stick with it for all encodes.

Twice it has gone to a normal shutdown state, but it just as abrupt. No "windows is shutting down" or screen flickers or anything, the computer is just on and then suddenly and near-instantaneously it is completely shut down.
Most of the time, this indicates a problem with the power supply or overheating. Occasionally it can be memory although this typically would be seen with a Blue screen of death.

IF your experienced with hardware, I'd suggest it's time for a spring clean (fans, dust removal etc) and validate the power supply operates correctly under strain.

Thank you very much. Reassuring to get two similar answers.

Sounds easiest to run the encodes with lower CPU dedication to make sure the computer isn't working too hard. I can also position it on the desk to enhance cooling.

I've never opened up a laptop before so I'll try other stuff before I try dusting it.

I'll also experiment with the Rf setting to see if I can use it without the computer crashing.

Thanks for the stress test suggestions - one thing though- you said to check my CPU temps - is that monitored by the program, or are you just talking about putting my hand on the computer, or is there another way I'm supposed to check?

Thanks!

Something like speedfan might do the trick for temp monitoring.

you can download CPUID HW monitor here http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html which will give you a live look at what temps on your CPU and Hard drive are and what your fan speeds are. You can then run handbrake or any other CPU intensive program and monitor what temps your system is getting up to.
Then have a look at what your safe cpu temps should be - just google temps for your particular cpu or go to intel or AMD website and look for it there.
You may have a fan thats not working or as someone said it could be full of dust etc.

anyway try that and let us know what temps it shows before it crashes

edit: just noticed you have a core 2 T9400. Maximum TJ (thermal Junction) Temp on that chip is 105c

if your screen was freezing without computer shutting down i'd say bad sectors on your HDD and time to get it replaced. But sounds more like heat.

Thanks everyone for the support on this. I've got a solid set of recommendations to track down the problem.

What I've done so far is to limit the heat - I took my computer off of "high performance" and I've been running the conversions with my laptop on its end - so it has open air on both sides and hot air escaping out the top. I've also been using the Rf setting rather than 2-pass to shorten the total conversion time. No crashes!

Big Roo - thanks for the tip. When I get time I will check the temperatures and see what I can do about the dust. It would be nice to be able to run the conversions while I'm working on other things without turning the laptop sideways.

be careful with overworking laptops, there just not designed to be worked at full load for long period of times (generally speaking)

if you feel you do enough converting than maybe a Desktop pc may well be a good investment.

NOTE, there are a small handful of power laptops (laptops that are for power users), but these are very expensive, and quite wasteful as there desktop counter parts will be half the cost, half the hassle to achieve the same level of power (performance) also the reliability of PC's should be noted.

i dont think your laptop would be much good for anything else whilst running handbrake as its pretty cpu intensive. it maxes out my 4 cores. even on a quad core with hyperthreading it gets up to 80 odd percent on each core.

My Macbook Pro has run for 24-36 hours straight on long batch encodes. Any computer, laptop or desktop, should be able to sustain indefinite 100% CPU utilization without a problem. If it can't, then there is a hardware defect.

One would expect that, but the reality is somewhat different. Many manufacturers, especially those of cheap laptops, don't expect folk to be hammering it with HandBrake or other similarly heavy tools. They can cut costs by designing a machine for "Occasional Use" rather than "Heavy Use". They've made design decisions to use lower grade components.

I'd still be inclined to complain about something like this, as they almost never advertise the type of usage the machine is suitable for.

I ran a genome population analysis on my old MBP for my fiancée last year, which took about 6 weeks. ;)

Defective by design, then :)

I think it's sad that companies get away with this nonsense—it's like saying that you can't drive your car on the freeway for more than an hour at a time or it'll explode.
