External Blu-Ray Mac-Compatible Drive

Hi,

I've searched high and low in this forum, the internet at large without any luck! So I'm really hoping that someone here would be kind enough to point me in the right direction...

I've got a Macbook Pro and want an inexpensive OS X compatible drive - I don't need to be able to burn disks, but I want it to work natively under OS X (so I can use MakeMKV) and not have to go through BootCamp.

I would be super grateful if someone could recommend a USB Blu Ray drive or two!

I use this external drive with my iMac (running natively under OS X) for DVD encodes using HandBrake & Blu-ray encodes using MakeMKV:
Plextor BD USB Model PX-B310U

I have used it for nearly a year now with no problems.

It also worked fine with MakeMKV 1.6.3 under OS X 10.6.6 on my MBP. It does NOT work with MakeMKV 1.6.4 under OS X 10.6.6 on my iMac, however (never tried 1.6.3 on the iMac).

FWIW, the DASPI 1.2 update for MakeMKV appears to have fixed the issue; I can now use my drive with MakeMKV 1.6.5 without any apparent issues.

I use the same drive on my iMac and LOVE it. Works great for blu-ray, and handles DVDs about 4-5 times as fast as my internal !

Heh, looks like a fairly common drive!

It worked just fine for me (with AnyDVD HD in VMware and MakeMKV under OS X) until it stopped functioning (after only a few weeks).
I'm going to have it fixed under warranty but being very impatient, I purchased a desktop drive (LG BH10LS30) and enclosure (Icy Box IB-550StUS2-B-BL) in the meantime and/or as a replacement.

This combo also works well with MakeMKV; it's hardly any faster but not slower either, and - surprisingly? - it's also more silent. The enclosure is huge and an external power supply is required, but it only needs 1 USB port (the Asus required that both ports be plugged in on my MBP to work - I never tried using only one port on my iMac as I used a powered USB hub).

I have an internal LG WH10LS30 which I purchased from Newegg for $80. This is installed in a MacPro Westmere 6-core 3.33 GHz with 10 GHz ram and 5TB HD space. It works fine in this configuration. Before installing it, I tried it out with a MacMini running Parallels to get the firmware update. I used one of those USB - SATA devices to get it mounted. No reason why you couldn't do that as a temporary measure, and then get a case for it with the stuff built in.
