Join multiply files for lone long MKV file?

I wish to take a few old home made DVD's which I created that have chapter points etc join them together into only long file & render them out as a MKV file for playing in my media player. Do I have to join them together before using Handbrake & if so how is this done?

You could join them after HandBrake with mkvmerge

mkvmerge in1.mkv +in2.mkv +in3.mkv -o out.mkv

Or concatenate the VOBs before feeding to HB.
