Post by virus123 »

I've had a problem lately in which I am getting random weird lines on the right side of my videos. Here is a screenshot of an example:

Image

It is most evident at the top right in this frame. This artifact usually presents itself as a dark vertical bar. Here is the log for this video encode:

Anybody actually have any help or is this just a board full of minimods? Carborundum wants to be a mod on his first post

I'm just looking for some help in encoding. Isn't that what this section is for? I assure you I am doing NOTHING illegal as I own all my dvds.

Have you tried cropping 2 pixels from each side?

Thanks for the idea, I could do that but the problem is that there is picture on the sides that would be getting cut out. If possible I would like to preserve the entire picture and get rid of the artifact itself.

Are you sure that this is actually not just overscan information in the source material? I doubt it's being introduced by handbrake, so my guess is that it's in the source and is likely from overscan.

Thanks for your help, I think you're exactly right. Is cropping my only option to dealing with overscan?

Yes. It's just junk, I think most of the time it just mirrors the couple of pixels on the edge of the real frame so that it doesn't look out of place if the overscan is actually displayed.

Thanks a lot. I'll use cropping then. I've only encoded tv shows before and never ran into this problem until I started encoding my movie collection as well.
