Encodes Never Completing

Post by Sunstealer73 »

I have been encoding my entire DVD collection using the High Profile preset, MKV container, and pass-through AC3. I have two movies that never finish encoding though. They get to 100%, but just keep going. The movies are The Blind Side and Rainman. I let The Blind Side go all night (on a machine that usually takes 2 hours per movie) and it had written out 30GB when I finally stopped it. I did not save that log, but am attaching the one for Rainman below. I am not sure how to read what it is doing other than it seems to be audio related. This one was up to 2.5GB when I stopped it (the output should have been much less than that judging by my other encodes).

Log was too big for forum:

[10:41:14] * audio track 0
[10:41:14] + decoder: English (AC3) (5.1 ch) (track 1, id 80bd)
[10:41:14] + bitrate: 448 kbps, samplerate: 48000 Hz
[10:41:14] + mixdown: 6-channel discrete
[10:41:14] + encoder: ffac3
[10:41:14] + bitrate: 192 kbps, samplerate: 48000 Hz
Any reason your not using pass-thru? You're dropping a lot of quality using the AC3 encoder.

Also, something after chapter 30 seems to be tripping it up, using passthru may workaround the issue.

That is strange. The preset I have been using was set to Pass-Thru in 0.9.4. I upgraded to 0.9.5 a couple of days ago and didn't think to check my presets before finishing up the last few discs that I had remaining. I switched it to Pass-Thru just now and am trying it again. I have done over 300 movies so far with no problems until the last couple of days. Hopefully this will take care of it. Thanks for spotting that.

Custom presets are not updated by handbrake between versions, and should be recreated from scratch to avoid issues like yours.

Encode logs are stored to disc, instructions for finding them can be found in the BIG RED BOX at the top of the page.

What did you use to rip the DVD to disk?

HandBrake is having a lot of trouble with this rip. Give the AnyDVD trial a try.

I originally ripped the two I am having problems with using DVDFab. I tried ripping them again tonight with CloneDVD and noticed that it popped up an error box saying it was trying to repair the DVD structure. So, those two discs apparently have some sort of issue. CloneDVD did complete ripping them though and I am trying Handbrake again on the new rips.
