Need basic help on ripping, saving, etc

Post by sm801 »

At the risk of being ridiculed and banished, I have a very basic question. My background is the following: I am extremely limited in my computer/program writing abilities, I HAVE NONE! I asked an Apple Tech the best program for ripping scenes from DVD's so that I can pull a them for illustrations and he said that "HandBrake was the best and it was free. I'd pay for it though it's so good." Naturally I downloaded it and have been attempting to use it for the last few days. After extensive reading and several attempts, I throw myself on the mercy of the intelligent people. Each time I'm prompted with this, "HandBrake could not find VLC or your VLC is incompatible (Note: 32 bit vlc is not compatible with 64 bit HandBrake and vice-versa)." I have downloaded the correct VLC and still can not seem to establish communication between the programs. I've attempted to "scan anyway" with the results being horrendous. The process takes between 2-4 hours and the resulting video is not viewable. I am completely ignorant when it comes to this type of program and can not seem to find a "HandBrake Basics" that I fully understand. From what I've read, I can not figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've followed the basic instructions and have failed miserably. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Make sure VLC (the correct 32-bit or 64-bit version) is installed in /Applications or ~/Applications.

Hi,
Don't know if this will help but have you tried to open VLC and quit it again (to answer that dialogue that "This program as downloaded from blah, blah, blah" I saw that somewhere on the forum. Also VLC should be in your Applications folder, so take it off the temporary disk you downloaded by sliding it into the applications folder if you have not already done that.... and I assume you definitely have the 64 bit VLC there not the 32 bit. Try that. Best of luck.

  1. Download the version of VLC that matches the version of Handbrake you are running, 32 or 64 bit.
  2. Open the VLC disk image and drag the VLC icon to your Applications folder. It should be on your Finder sidebar.
  3. Launch VLC at least once, even if you never use it again. I can't stress how important it is to do this. Without this, OS X's security subsystem won't allow Handbrake access to VLC's decryption library.
  4. Launch Handbrake and enjoy!

Or better yet, download the Universal 32+64-bit Intel build of VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

It's usually the default on the front page (currently 40 MB), but can be found on that page I linked to as well.

Thanks for all the replies! I have finally got things working, but now I can not seem to capture/move clips or movie to Imovie for the purpose of burning short "scenes" for illustrative purposes during lessons, etc Any help in this regard is again, greatly appreciated and thank you for your patience! When I save the file to an "m4v" on my desktop, I can't select this to move to Imovie. I can play it on the VLC, but can't seem to capture and move. Sorry if I'm repeating myself! Been a long day. I should note and explain, I am a pastor trying to take multiple clips from the same movie or multiple movies and place on one DVD instead of having to arduously move from a clip at the beginning, in the middle and the end for illustrative purposes.

What does this mean? Are you trying to create Video DVDs?

Sorry! added my note during the your post. Yes, trying to move multiple clips from the same movie/movies to one dvd. I may be in the wrong place for that, but following the Apple Tech's advice has led me here.

God, I'm glad I seen this thread. I'm in the exact same position, only I've followed what everyone has suggested here and I'm going nowhere. I still need to "Get VLC".

I'm going insane. Has anyone got any more suggestions?

I don't mean to be insensitive, but you must be doing something wrong.

What type of Mac do you have? Is it an Intel or a PPC? If Intel, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, i5, i7, etc.?
What is the name of the file that you downloaded from the VLC website? It should be "something something.dmg"
Is the file "VLC.app" in your Applications folder? The same folder with all your other applications (such as Safari)?
Have you run VLC.app from the Applications folder, and not just from the disk image?

here is what I failed to do and man I felt stupid, but I did not move Hand Brake into my app's and was using it as "read only". That's why the two could not communicate I believe. Anyhow, I've determined that HB won't do what I wanted to do, which is capture a short clip and move to Imovie etc. I'm thinking I'm going to have to pay for Screen Flow or something similar to accomplish what I need.
