Didn't know about that. I downloaded the iPhone version and didn't think anything more of it afterwards.

I encoded Futurama episodes at RF 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17. RF 9 was crystal clear, but beginning with RF 11 there were subtle visual artifacts in the image. So for now, I'm going with Apple TV 2, RF 10, and Detelecine and Decomb set to default.

I've been a web designer since 1995, and I regularly have to save JPG images for web use. In Photoshop, you have a choice in the quality, from 0-100. Usually, 70 is "good enough". You can't tell by looking at the image that it's been degraded at all. But I've found with experience that setting the quality to 80 makes the whole site feel cleaner and less junky. Even if you can't tell the difference between an image saved at 70 and an image saved at 80 when they're side by side, you can feel the difference when you're confronted by a whole environment constructed at a given quality level.

It's the same thing here -- I want the animation or shot footage to be silky smooth, without the least defect.

What if, instead of using

Code: Select all

ref=2:bframes=2:subq=6:mixed-refs=0:weightb=0:8x8dct=0:trellis=0
as your advanced settings, you try

Code: Select all

b-adapt=2:rc-lookahead=50:deblock=-1,-1:psy-rd=0.4,0.00:aq-strength=0.6:bframes=5:ref=6
It'll be slower, but it's more efficient and also tuned for animation.

Just a comment on the RF5 vs RF19 thing. Why is testing being done on Futurama? This is possibly the worst test case because it's practically animated using the "Fill Paint" option from Microsoft Paint and will produce fantastic compression results no matter what setting you use.

There are examples of better test cases on this forum and elsewhere. I find that testing a scene with really dark portions is a big help because on my viewing screen, at RF 19, there are these ghastly large blobs of black with large edges distracting me from the show while at lower RF values (RF16), the blobs of black have mostly reduced and begin to show subtleties which are less distracting.

These large distracting blobs at RF 19 go away when I'm viewing my screen in a well lit room. In a dark room however, the blobs are easily noticeable.

I understand that RF values are a personal choice, but just mathematically, RF 5 isn't adding to perceived quality any more than RF 10 I imagine. Testing on Futurama is fine and dandy, but if you ever encoded a noisy TV show like Corner Gas or Prime Suspect, watch out! There's no way to reduce file size significantly there without the use of Denoise filters, but then you start to lose details and you've just negated why you use RF 5 in the first place.

For all the talk of "don't go below RF 19", either JohnAStebbins or TedJ here (I can't remember who) was talking about encoding at an RF level two or three lower than the recommended amount. Like they say, hard drives are cheap and if you want to put a couple of extra MB of viewing quality insurance, go for it.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it in this thread, but the RF factor behaves logarithmically (I think this is true). So what you're getting at RF 16 and above for DVDs is the flattening portion of a logarithmic curve, where increasing amount of MB or GB are consumed in making the file, but negligible rises in perceived quality.

The reason I was using Futurama is because I was in the middle of encoding it anyway. There are lots of 20-minute episodes so I could easily compare Handbrake settings.

And, since the first scene of every episode has a background that's particularly difficult to encode cleanly, I could find the point at which visual artifacts disappear. Now I know that I can always rip at RF 10 and the result will be great. It might be overkill most of the time, but at least I never have to think about it.

If I get a giant file from ripping a noisy film, I'll just move the RF up a bit. If the filesize is the same or less than the file size of the video_ts folder, it's fine. With RS 10, the 22-minute episodes are about 550 MB whereas on the original DVD they were about 1.2 GB, so I'm happy.

I never meant to claim that everyone should encode at RF 5, or that Futurama was a good test case -- I only posted in the first place because a few people had said that RF > 19 was a waste, and I knew that it wasn't (always) true. What you say about black blobs is interesting and makes total sense.

I am not very experienced with Handbrake. I found this page because I was trying to understand the various settings.

@jamiemlaw, I will try those settings and let you know what I think.

As a public service announcement to anyone who stumbles across this page by searching the forum:

Anything below RF18 or so is wasteful. RF5 is clinically insane for 99.9% of source material. If you're seeing visual artifacts it's because you're not using proper encode settings or your source falls into that 0.01% exception.

Two other possibilities:

1) the artifacts are present in the source

2) your display is poorly calibrated

@AndrewSwift - Try watching the original DVD just as closely. You'd be surprised how screwy that looks to start with. At RF11, I'll bet you're seeing artefacts that are already in the source to start with.

Wait a minute. What mduell just said, but more precisely, are you watching the show or pressing pause to study a frame really closely?

Also, something I just realized. Why do you have most of the x264 settings turned off or nerfed when you want to use RF 5? Try turning some of the more advanced settings on and then trying RF 16 at least.

I am using a calibrated Eizo SX2262W screen. I do not see any artifacts when watching the original DVD.

I am watching at normal speed. I did stop the film a few times, but the visual noise is more obvious when the film is playing.

@randomreuben, I don't know about the advanced settings. I will try other stuff -- I'm only just getting started. It is perfectly possible that some other parameter is causing the artifacts. I will start by trying the settings proposed by jamiemlaw, then looking around the forums some more.

Everyone: to be clear, I am not proposing using RF 5. I only said at the beginning that it seemed to work fine for me. RF 10 seems to be as good and more space-efficient.

RF10 is half as crazy as RF5, but you've got a whole lot of crazy that you started with so—for everyone—RF10 is still crazy.

@jamiemlaw, I tried your proposed settings at RF 10, 14.5 and 19. There were still noticeable defects at RF 14.5 and 19. I didn't see any differences compared to my previous settings.

It sounds like an incorrect encoder setting. Make sure you have fast P frame skip turned off, there's an option for it in older versions, newer version doesn't have the option in the gui since it's disabled by default, but if your using old presets the option may not get in there. You can add it to your preset by adding

Code: Select all

no-fast-pskip=1
on the bottom, it should always be listed on the bottom of advanced.

It's something that x264 does by default that has to be disabled by a command, it causes the problem you described which is flat/solid color areas having artifacts. It only disappears when you lower the RF number because your throwing more bits at it, then the problem doesn't occur.

My two cents on scores: RF18-22 are transparent on DVDs 18 being for people who stop each frame to compare and 22 for a non technical friend which they think is better, and RF 20-24 on Blu Rays.

Thank you! High Profile with RF=19, Anamorphic: Strict, Audio: AC3 Passthru (or DTS if available) with MKV envelope is what I shall use!

Your point would be a lot clearer if you posted a few matched-frame screenshots at RF 10 versus 14.5 and 19, so we could see these defects.

RF 10 on nearly any live-action material will give you extremely huge results, probably larger than the source.

Okay, I am very new at all this and only starting to use HB to archive MythTV recordings in H264 format, but what the heck is this RF y'all keep talking about and how is it set on the command line (in Linux if that matters)?

My current command line which is giving decent size v. quality results is:

HandBrakeCLI -i input.mpg -o output.mkv -f mkv -e x264 -b 2200 -E faac -B 192 -R 48 --strict-anamorphic

which I started from a tip on a blog I searched to figure out how to use HB, then I tweaked it over the last few days as I've learned with trial & error. I'm very open for tips or suggestions! The source files are either from an analog MPEG-2 TV encoder (cable captured at 720x480) or from the HDHomeRun HD QAM tuner, (720p).

RF is short for Rate Factor, also referred to here as constant quality. Rather than selecting an arbitrary bitrate which may be too high for some sources and too low for others, constant quality selects the bitrate required to reach a specified quality metric. It is easy enough to use, simply replace "-b 2200" on your commandline with "-q <RF>" - I recommend RF values of 20-18 for standard definition materal and 23-21 for 720p, where lower RF values equal higher quality/bitrate.

Thank you so much, TedJ! Your answer was clear & concise so that even I could understand it. I will make this change to my script and give it a go. I'm curious to see the difference in size and/or quality. Out of curiosity, when using -q instead of -b, is there a way after the run to find out what bitrate was used?

The final bitrate will be indicated at the end of the encode log:

Code: Select all

[03:17:46] mux: track 0, 7394 frames, 663123230 bytes, 1793.19 kbps, fifo 8
Also, you can check the bitrate in applications like MediaInfo.

Thanks. I'm running the transcodes now (overnight) and will check results in the morning. My initial tests were good at -q 20 but needed deinterlacing. Once I see the end result on the whole file I'll post back with the command and sizes.

Okay, the tests transcodes are complete and the results are mostly fantastic! Thanks to all for their input and the help. A large thank you to the developers of HandBrake as it is a very high quality program, (I'm using the command-line version in Mythbuntu).

I apologize up front for the very long post, but I wanted to include results with timings, sizes, and the logs and I can find no way in this forum to attach text or zip files, so I left with just pasting the contents below.

First, a quick summary: All resulting files look good and playback with correct aspect ratios in mythfrontend's internal player. Some of the SD files even looked better than the original! It appears that HB may have cleaned up some of the analog "snow" and smoothed things out. Anyway, the wife is happy, so I am too. The HD results are indistinguishable to my eyes from the original 720p QAM recordings but at roughly 40-45% of the filesize.

A quality setting (RF) of 19 worked great for the SD recordings, but didn't save enough space for HD. So I bumped HD to 22 quality (RF) and the results looked the same only much smaller files. Since this is not run by hand but is setup as a User Job in MythTV, I needed the BASH script to figure out which type of recording the original was and set the -q parameter accordingly. I have this working well and tested thoroughly. The script is pasted here:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash

width=`ffmpeg -i "$1" 2>&1 1>/dev/null | grep Video: | awk '{print $6}' | awk 'BEGIN{FS="x"}{print $1}' | sed 's/,*$//'`

if [ "$width" != "1280" ]; then
  quality=19
else
  quality=22
fi

HandBrakeCLI -i "$1" -o "$2" -f mkv -e x264 -q $quality -E faac -B 192 -R 48 --strict-anamorphic -d slow -5 -8 medium
and here are sample test results from the script generated by simply adding "echo" to the start of the HandBrakeCLI command:

Code: Select all

$ ~/2x264 HD.mpg dummy.mkv
HandBrakeCLI -i HD.mpg -o dummy.mkv -f mkv -e x264 -q 22 -E faac -B 192 -R 48 --strict-anamorphic -d slow -5 -8 medium

$ ~/2x264 SD.mpg dummy.mkv
HandBrakeCLI -i SD.mpg -o dummy.mkv -f mkv -e x264 -q 20 -E faac -B 192 -R 48 --strict-anamorphic -d slow -5 -8 medium
The only issue I still see which is not a huge deal, but is a visual difference from the original is one analog SD file of a tennis match from ESPN2 has wavy court lines after transcoding. The side lines that run vertically on the screen seem to "snake around" instead of appearing straight and crisp. I'm not sure if this can be solved and if it can, I have no idea how. Tips?

So here is the summary of the results of my 5 tests with a brief note as to what the videos contained and their source:

Code: Select all

444M	 5273_20110119195900-ORIG.mpg

Re: What does RF: in constant quality stand for?

Post by luv2hike »

It seems the wavy baseline issue I was seeing on the q20 encode of the tennis match from ESPN (SD) went away after re-encoding the file with a -q of 19. So I guess one point of the RF made enough difference for it to fix the jagged vertical lines.

Re: What does RF: in constant quality stand for?

Post by luv2hike »

Slight correction (oops) to my 2x264 helper script in 2 posts above. I checked the if statement for width backwards to determine HD or SD. HD resolutions, I now know, can change (1080i or 720p). SD resolution is fixed by my capture card setting in mythtv-setup at 720x480. So I instead should check for a width of 720 for SD and else encode as HD. This will prevent HD sizes other than 1280x720 from using the SD rate.

So SD=quality of 19.5, and HD=quality of 22.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash

width=`ffmpeg -i "$1" 2>&1 1>/dev/null | grep Video: | awk '{print $6}' | awk 'BEGIN{FS="x"}{print $1}' | sed 's/,*$//'`

if [ "$width" == "720" ]; then
  quality=19.5
else
  quality=22
fi

HandBrakeCLI -i "$1" -o "$2" -f mkv -e x264 -q $quality -E faac -B 192 -R 48 --strict-anamorphic -d slow -5 -8 medium
