Large Blocking

Post by joethezombie »

I recently upgraded to 0.9.5, but on my first encode, I am having an issue with large blocking during the title sequence. I downgraded back down to my tried and tested svn3555 and the problem magically disappears. I then stepped up to svn3678, and the problem again shows. WMP12, VLC, The KMPlayer, and the PS3 are my playback options. All are affected.

I wonder whether it's the source or the fact that you're using start/stop times. Can you encode the whole source and post the log for that?
Hint: low output resolution and

Re: Large Blocking

Post by joethezombie »

Well, I did a full encode previously, using svn3736. That is where I first noticed the blocking. I then worked back and tried 0.9.5, svn3678, and svn3555 using start/stops. svn3555 is the only one that didn't show the blocking.

Here's the encode log from the entire source using svn3736. The source title is different, as I attempted to re-rip from the Blu-ray, but it is indeed the same source.

Code: Select all

There have been two ffmpeg bumps since r3555 - could be a decoding issue. But you're the only one to report this specific issue so far.

Any chance you could reproduce the issue with a short sample of the source (which you could then upload)?

Also, what happens if you preserve the Blu-Ray directory structure and open the folder above BDMV with HandBrake?

Thanks Rodeo. Pointing HB at the BR structure still produces the artifacts, exactly as shown. I've managed to split the .m2ts file down to a 260MB, 1 minute sample that is clear on playback, but produces artifacts on the encode. I'll upload it when I get back home this evening.

Hi,

I can confirm that there is a blocking problem. After upgrading to 0.9.5 Nero 4.3.2.0 shows blocking when playing the file.
After going back to 0.9.4 everything is fine again.

Sounds like an issue with your decoder. With the 0.9.5 release, Handbrake no longer overrides the x264 default setting for b-pyramid. Try a test encode with it disabled manually and see if that helps.

It's an FFmpeg decoding bug. The issue shows up in HandBrake's static previews (though you couldn't see this in the WinGUI since it doesn't feature static previews), VLC 1.1.5 and MPlayer OSX Extended r14 (FFmpeg "r32568").

Edit: it seems that the cause of the bug is some assembly code introduced in FFmpeg svn-r25361 (does not occur when FFmpeg is compiled with --disable-asm). The issue is still present in the latest FFmpeg (svn-r26323).

The last version of HandBrake to work with your file is svn3598.

Sorry, silly newb here - are we talking about the playback software's decoder or the decoder in HB that decodes the source to something it can compress?

Edit: I have the same issue as well (http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=19495).

Got it, thanks.

And I'm assuming disabling the assembly code will slow/break the decode, or somehow make things not work?

I have a few things I encoded with the affected versions that I haven't gotten to watch yet and since my computer isn't doing anything I was wondering if it would be a good idea to just redo them, but since since 3599 fixed another decoding problem I am guessing unless we see this problem we should not worry about rencoding right?

Ah! Excellent detective work, Rodeo! Interestingly enough, I've completed 4 other Blu-ray encodes that show no problem what so ever. For the time being, I'll still use the latest and greatest, and fallback to 3555 only when needed.

I disabled the b-pyramid and now the output looks good.

Shouldn't break anything, but will make it slower. Decoding 1080p H.264 is slow enough as it is.

It only affects H.264 sources. I'm not sure which sources it affects, though I have a feeling non-BD sources are much less likely to be affected. And as you pointed out, the older FFmpeg used by svn3598 and earlier has another H.264 decoding bug…

So definitely don't re-encode unless you see this specific issue in your encodes.

I encoded both "The Social Network" and "Beauty and the Beast", both from a Bluray source and featuring h.264 video and did not see this occur, but will keep an eye on other discs as I am reconverting my HD collection for AppleTV2.

I should note that I did not feed the BR structure directly into Handbrake, I extracted the streams via eac3to (converting to AC3 at the same time) and remuxed with tsMuxer before feeding the m2ts into Handbrake.

That probably doesn't matter. The bug is in the H.264 decoder, not in the demuxer (HandBrake as its own MPEG-PS and MPEG-TS demuxers anyway).

That's what I thought, but figured I'd include it anyways.

For those who like to build from source: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=19372&p=91751#p91751

This'll get fixed in FFmpeg at some point, and will eventually make its way to the nightlies.

Edit: the patch has been committed to FFmpeg. BTW, the fix is from Ronald Bultje (FFmpeg developer).

This'll get fixed in FFmpeg at some point, and will eventually make its way to the nightlies.

Edit: the patch has been committed to FFmpeg. BTW, the fix is from Ronald Bultje (FFmpeg developer).
Wow, that was quick!

Anxiously awaiting the first nightly with the fix! :)

Edit 2: updated patch.
Has FFMPEG been fixed in the current Windows nightly? Because I am also having blocking problems with my encodes.

As of this post, it has not been checked into SVN yet... it won't appear in a nightly until the change has been checked in.

And no, I don't know when that will happen.
