Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
where do i find the encoding log?
Actually, forget it, I found it but I believe it was deleted. I suppose I will have to encode again with the same settings and then post the log tomorrow.

Uhh one other really important (and dumb) change you made. Put the width back to 1280 and it should be nice and smooth.bucket2233 wrote:Code: Select all

Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
+1
As has been covered numerous times in this thread and elsewhere on this forum, the ATV2 will only output 720p video and it doesn't quite have the horsepower to downscale 1080p video in realtime, causing stuttering and dropped frames.

That's probably the cause of your stuttering. Why did you uncheck the peak framerate box?bucket2233 wrote:Code: Select all

Funny how bad things happen when you modify the presets in ways you don't understand.

Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
No, Handbrake uses the x264 library for encoding, it has no hardware acceleration support. There's been some work on adding GPU acceleration, but so far they've it's not actually ended up being faster (getting data back out from the GPU is *slow* and slow machine also tend to have slow graphics cards).nick2421 wrote:Is there a hardware encoder that works with handbrake that I can purchase for Windows 7 to make the encoding process quicker?
As a general rule HW encoders tend to produce crap and/or very large videos fast, the most important point is that you can usually do that equally "well" (or rather badly) with x264 by using faster settings than default. If the machine is old/slow enough (Atom or P4) it may not be true but then I also expect that the best way to use a given amount of money is usually to buy a better machines instead (at the lower end a used and/or refurbished one).
Either get a machine that isn't from the bronze age or use faster settings and accept larger files for the same quality (or do both).nick2421 wrote:I have a P4 3.0ghz system with 4gb of ram, but to convert a DVD using the high profile is taking about 5 hours. I have over 100 dvds that I would like to convert for the new apple tv, but at 5 hours each it doesn't make sense. I figure if I can purchase some hardware encoder, the process should be hopefully alot quicker.
Any sugguestions would be appreciated.
For a good set of well chosen speed/size trade-offs (for ATV2 look at the second set of settings): http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php ... 001#p88001
Don't expect wonders and I wouldn't use "superfast" but "fast" and "veryfast" can be worth trying if you're unwilling to let it take the time it takes using better settings or get faster hardware. Rodeo do have a point about possibly having to adjust the RF value, in my testing it appears you should probably decrease it (increase quality) somewhat for faster settings to avoid additional quality loss compared to the standard preset.
Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
I noticed that software from Little App factory - which rips dvds now has a compression tab. I thought I would try it and and compare. As it turns out they have incorporated HB into their software. Its an older version .0.9.4 and it does not have a preset for apple tv2. It also doesn't save anytime.
Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
HB is giving me "No valid source found" when trying to encode. The dvd plays fine in all dvd players and the audio and video folders are intact.

This error seems to be pretty indicative of your problem. Does the .dvdmedia folder play correctly in DVD Player.app? I would guess that you have a bad rip, but you might try disabling dvdnav in Handbrake's Preferences; although, I doubt that will fix it.wmrrock wrote:libdvdnav: ifoRead_VTS_PTT_SRPT failed

Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
Wow. I've been using the nightly builds for the last couple months and using the ATV preset and processing a movie ususally takes me about 1-2 hours on core2duo. The last couple movies I've tried encoding with the newly released version 0.9.5, and the ATV2 preset, are now taking 6-7 hours? Are there that many changes to this new preset? Has anyone else played with the new preset and seen any difference in encoding time? I am a newb, so be gentle... I also have an ATV1 so I may just stick with that preset and just bump up the screen resolution. I can't believe the difference in encoding time. I'm pretty patient, but geeeez.....
Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
The 80% rise in picture resolution is going to increase encode time considerably by itself. The ATV2 is also more capable in terms of H.264 features supported, so encoding takes longer but is more efficient (higher quality and/or smaller size). As always if you want a faster encode, use faster settings.
Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
The AppleTV 2 preset should be about the same speed as the AppleTV 1 preset at the same resolution. But it defaults to 1280 width rather than 960.
Also, the AppleTV 2 preset is NOT COMPATIBLE with the AppleTV 1.
Also, the AppleTV 2 preset is NOT COMPATIBLE with the AppleTV 1.
Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
I read elsewhere on this forum that setting modulus to 4 is recommended if your device supports it. Does anyone know if iPhone 4 supports a modulus setting of 4? If so, do you agree that 4 is the best setting?
Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
You can set it to 2 for DVD sources (or use anamorphic strict).

Thanks Rodeo. Is there a good reason for choosing modulus 2 over anamorphic strict or vice versa? Also, what setting would you recommend for HD sources?
Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
I use custom anamorphic, 1280x720 mod 2, for my encodes from HD-DVD and Bluray sources. Doesn't really help improve output on the AppleTV, but does offer a bit of future-proofing perhaps (at the cost of slightly larger files).zonomorph wrote:Thanks Rodeo. Loose mod 2 for all sources.zonomorph wrote:Thanks Rodeo. Is there a good reason for choosing modulus 2 over anamorphic strict or vice versa? Also, what setting would you recommend for HD sources?
The same result as strict for DVD sources and works for HD sources.

Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
Can anyone tell me what the main differences between the Apple TV preset, iPad preset and Normal are?
I have been encoding episodes of 24 primarily for my iPad but that will play on my Apple TV2 aswell, I was using the Apple TV preset with the output picture format set to 720x576 (1024x576 anamprphic) and the RF setting of 19
This was giving me file sizes of around 500-600MB and an bitrate of around 1700-1900 but the encodes were approx 30-35fps
I just tried a few rips with the NORMAL setting but keeping my picture size and RF settings as above and i was getting an almost identical file size and I cannot see any difference in picture but the encodes were approx 50-60fps
Why is the Apple TV and iPad encode so much slower, what does it do that the normal preset doesn't???
Thanks
Nick

Different settings that result in higher quality and lower file sizes, at the expense of encode speed. Some of those settings result in files that are not compatible with all playback devices.nick270881 wrote:Why is the Apple TV and iPad encode so much slower, what does it do that the normal preset doesn't???
The general rule is: speed, quality, file size. Pick any two.
