Hi followed instructions, pressed start, stuff starts to happen and then ... lights out, goodnight Vienna, computer switches off! Why? What can be done?

Thanks and regards

Don't overclock, check your cooling, etc., etc., etc. HandBrake will stress your machine more than almost any other app you can run - if you have hardware issues, it will expose them.

Quoted for truth. I've used Handbrake to stress test several PC's I've assembled for friends and family. :)

Why do you keep posting this reply to every instance of this issue. This is not correct. My computer has plenty of resources (dual core 4 gigs of memory) and it still shuts down during processing. This is a problem with handbrake.

Okay...maybe you're right...the heat of my CPU is off the charts right now!

This is completely unrelated - having a powerful PC doesn't make it less likely to overheat.

Because it's invariably true. Spontaneous crashes or shutdowns during encoding come down to three hardware issues, in decreasing order of probability:
  1. CPU overheating.
  2. A bad RAM module.
  3. A malfunctioning power supply.
Regardless of arguments to the contrary, EVERY time we've asked a user to stress test their hardware using wPrime or the like the hardware has also failed. Video encoding is very CPU intensive and is likely to expose issues with marginal hardware.

Allrighty, I encoded 12 videos in a constant batch just 3 days ago, now this same problem happens to me. This is same file types to and from in comparison to the last batch I ran. First round, no problem. This round, it don't get 15 minutes into the process of ANY video I try. Consistency would prove the hardware theory correct, but this seems to be a different situation. Any ideas as to why this is happening? (Other than gradual hardware deterioration, which also seems impossible.)

Go here: http://www.wprime.net/

Download and run. Report back if it crashes your computer or not.

Two possibilities. The sustained heat has cracked the thermal compound on your CPU... this can happen if it's been applied to heavily. The cooling fan on your heatsink has died under the sustained load from your previous encode run.

@blueneostang - IT's actually surprisingly common these days. Consumer machines and laptops are just not built to Handle sustained heavy usage. It's always worth spending a bit more and getting a quality built machine.
