libvorbis 1.3.1 multichannel improvements

Post by Dukers »

Vorbis (Everywhere) surround work update 20100218 (demo1)
Vorbis (Everywhere) surround work update 20100311 (demo2)
Vorbis (Everywhere) surround work update 20100326 (demo3)

Can't HandBrake take advantage of these improvements? The current HB's aoTuV Beta 5 is based on libvorbis 1.1.2, prior to the multichannel improvements.

I was wondering why HandBrake decided to go with the aoTuV spin of Vorbis. The wikipedia entry for auToV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorbis#aoTuV says
aoTuV is a modified version of the reference encoder created by a Japanese developer named Aoyumi (aoTuV stands for Aoyumi Tuned Vorbis), which improves its quality, especially at lower bitrates. Initially built upon Vorbis 1.0, the improvements of aoTuV Beta2 were merged back into Vorbis 1.1. Further improvements were released, the current Beta 5.7 version (released on March 3, 2009) is an improvement of libvorbis 1.2.1 RC2.
Since aoTuV seems fine-tuned for low-bitrate encodes, please could HandBrake switch to the main Vorbis version? The Vorbis codec just got an update to the 1.3.2 stable version and I was wondering if the Vorbis version in Handbrake could be updated to reflect this since the included aoTuV version is over four years old now.

I'm keen on the Vorbis codec because it seems to do away with the issues I'm having with the video shearing. http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=18676

Just to pre-empt the "we eagerly await your patch" comment, I don't know how to do this, or I would have supplied the patch.

The source is frozen, so it won't be going in for the next release.

Maybe in the future we'll upgrade it, but there is very little interest from the developers, so unless someone submits a patch, it'll likely be some time away, if ever.

I appreciate that a feature freeze is in place for 0.9.5. I don't mind waiting for this, so I'll put up a request in the "Pony" section sometime in the new year and hopefully when things are a little less hectic, someone may have the interest/time.
