MakeMKV, AnyDVD, Handbrake & AppleTV - a tale of Avatar BD

Post by omni »

I have been using Handbrake and encoding Blu Ray movies for AppleTV for over a year now and of course it's had its ups and downs but here recently it turned into a disaster. I bought a 27" imac i5 and was excited to see how fast all my movies would encode. I decided to switch from a windows environment to an all OSX environment for encoding Blu Ray movies. It hasn't worked out so well for me and I think I've narrowed it down.

The problem movies were all made into an MKV by MakeMKV then encoded with Handbrake (the last snapshot that was released, crf to 22), converting DTS with Moyea MKV Convertor, running through metaX then combining .ac3 and subtitles with Subler. When I tested all the files on the mac and the first few minutes on AppleTV everything worked fine. When I tried to watch the actual movies - i kept noticing not only stuttering but extreme stuttering where the movies would just pause and never come back. Sometimes the audio would still keep playing but no video.

I went back to my old methods - using AnyDVD under windows, converting dts to ac3/muxing with ClownBD. Then running that file through os x version of handbrake (again latest snapshot, crf to 22). Even though this generated a much bigger file, the file plays just fine with no stuttering. Here are some logs:

My guess is either Handbrake handles .m2ts and .mkv differently or MakeMKV is doing something strange when it repackages to .mkv that appleTV really doesn't like. Maybe people have had better luck than me but I"m going back to anydvd/clownbd unless someone can point out something 'wrong' that I'm doing.

I no longer use MakeMKV to create mkv files. They never work well in VLC and Handbrake often has trouble working with them. I've no idea why this is, but I recommend you stick with m2ts files if you are going to use MakeMKV.

Incidently, I have noticed that Subler isn't always reliable. A couple of my movies have become useless after going through Subler, despite the fact that I use the optimize function.

I've encoded avatar a billion different ways - crf20 all the way down to crf24 and ive still had stutter issues. I even encoded an universal version and still had stutter.

So I thought about what all of the files have in common aside from handbrake. The one program I've been running them all through has been subler.

So I encoded an crf22 version and didn't run it through subler and zero stuttering issues. Note that I added subtitles to being encoded to handbrake, which I had never done before.

So I thought maybe it was a bug with subler 0.97, so I downloaded 0.95 and tried adding chapter information (file generated by anydvd/clownbd workflow, iforget exactly which program generates the chapter text file), subtitle (English, navi only and Chinese) and still got stuttering.

So at this point I'm not sure if it's the chapter file being added or maybe subler doing something to the file that appletv doesn't like. I can't imagine 0.95 having a bug with stuttering that was never mentioned? Maybe it's some magical combination of variables with something that was added into handbrake recently?

I'll keep doing research but seems like as long as I avoid subler, no stuttering.

I run all of my encodes through Subler and do not notice any stuttering problems on my AppleTV (from both DVD and HDDVD/Bluray sources). I've pretty much given up on attaching soft subtitles for Bluray/HDDVD (too much work for something I never use -- now only use it for forced subs), but I do all of my tagging, artwork, and chapter attachment. I always Save + Optimize before importing into iTunes.

A long time ago with attaching .srt files through Subler, stuttering on playback (even when they weren't enabled), but this was fixed awhile ago (at least in my case).

Hm...I've never clicked the Optimize button before. Looking up what it does on subler's faq - doesn't look like it would really effect my problem but I'll try it.

I am starting to lean towards .srt files being the culprit. When I add them through handbrake no stutter but through subler, yes.

You said there was a problem before? Do you remember any more details about it?

So after nightstrm here suggested optimize - I went back and one of the files I was having problems with, I clicked optimize and now everything (with subtitles, chapter, etc) plays fine!

This is on subler 0.95 since I downgraded from 0.97.

So not 100% sure why this fixed my problem but it has and I thank you a lot, as it was really starting to drive me nuts.

Afaik the optimize in subler and the "web optimized" checkbox in hb do the exact same thing. Though ritsuka would have to speak directly to it. But I am almost positive its the same thing with the same libmp4v2 muxer (both hb and subler use the same muxing library).

I'll be honest with you, I never clicked Web Optimized as i figured it was meant for streaming video over the web. shrug. I tried to look up info on the option and this was the best resource I could find:

http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10870

Here is the subler faq about optimization:
What's the "Optimize" function ?

It interleaves the audio and video samples, and puts the "MooV" atom at the begining of the file, restoring the Quicktime "fast-start" (also known as "pseudo-streaming") ability of the file.

Sounds like it's doing basically the same thing. I'm not 100% sure why this has solved my problem (at least on avatar), but I'll experiment some more.

Interesting - I had the same problem with stuttering from the windows side using eac3to - when converting the .h264 track to .mkv. I fixed mine by re-running eac3to on track 1 and outputting a straight (non-converted) .h264 - remuxing with tsmuxer then converting with handbrake.

Confirmed, Sublers Optimize and HB's "Web optimized" do exactly the same thing. Having said that it promped a dev discussion on irc to change HB's "Web optimized" to just "Optimize" as the web part imho is misleading. So it will change.

Now one caveat to be aware of, if you use optimize in HB ... then tag the movie after ... the optimization is broken from HB, it needs to be redone with Subler or another capable app. One more reason imho Subler is a great tagging companion to HB.

Thanks for finding out that they are indeed the same thing.

I must say that running Optimize in Subler has solved ALL of my streaming issues for HD stuff - including MakeMKV files that I suspected as being a problem.
