getting subtitles to work

Hi,

I have converted all my precious DVD,s to MP4 format using handbrake. It has taken me about 6 weeks.

I have started to notice films like Kill Bill dont have any subtitles in them when they speak Japanease.

I want all my films to be in English without the option of subtitles but I do want to have subtitle whenever somebody speaks a different language & there should be subtitles there.

Is there an option in Handbrake to do this or should I use a different programme.

It's called "forced subtitles" and if there is a track that has only the forced subs you just select it and select it to be forced (In Handbrake).

I've also been trying to get forced subtitles to work in Kill Bill Volume 1 (and 2, but let's just deal with 1 first). I read that there was a bug in 0.9.4 that meant subtitles didn't work, so I downloaded the latest nightly build and tried again, still to no avail. If I open the video in VLC, Quicktime or iTunes, there are no subtitles, and VLC/Quicktime reckon there is no subtitle track either. If your release of Kill Bill Volume 1 is like mine, then you want the third subtitle track without the forced only flag. The forced only flag is used to ensure that the foreign dialogue segments are displayed in an otherwise inactive full english subtitle track. This disc uses a separate track for this purpose.

Since you're running a nightly build, 99% of discs will be detected correctly by using foreign audio search in conjunction with forced only.

For DVDs: Foreign Audio Search (with Forced Only checked). It will scan all subtitle tracks that match the first audio track's language, and select the first track that has forced subtitles; if no track has forced subs, it will select the first track with a duration of less than 10% of the movie duration. If neither are found, it assumes there are no forced subs and doesn't select any subtitle track. It tends to be pretty accurate and should be safe to leave on all the time.

Note: in 0.9.4, Foreign Audio Search is partially broken - it will successfully find forced subs with the 10% rule, but fails to detect subtitles with forced flags. You should use the nightly (see the announcement at the top of every subforum).

For Blu-Ray, no idea. But since HandBrake doesn't support Blu-Ray PGS subtitles, you'll have to extract them with other tools anyway.

I've spent the last several days researching Bluray and subtitles. First, read here about how Handbrake handles subtitles.

Blurays use PGS-type subtitles. They can be encoded in a .mkv file but not in an .m4v. In addition, for Handbrake to create an output would require a rendering engine to place the subtitles in the .m4v output. So if you put a .mkv with PGS into Handbrake your output will have no subs. (The devs are working on a solution, however.)

What you can do is export the PGS subtitles into .sup using mkvextract (part of mkvtoolnix). It's manual and involves using the CLI, so you've been warned. Your output from this will be a VOBSUB (SUB/IDX) bitmap of the subtitles. I use a tool called BDSup2Sub for this.

Finally you then mux your SUB/IDX subtitles back into your .mkv and then encode from Handbrake. You'll now have a bitmap available for Handbrake to burn onto your encode. Note, as per the earlier link, you cannot passthrough VOBSUB and you can only burn it. So, personally, this is really only good for "forced" subtitles (speaking Klingon in ST:VI) or entire foreign language films. You will not be able to turn off the subs.

If you want "soft" subtitles in your Bluray encode the absolutely easiest way is to ignore everything I said above and go online and find an .SRT file for your Bluray encode and add it during the encode process via Handbrake's dialog. This will give you subtitles you can turn off and on and will work on your ATV, iPad, etc. Unfortunately there's no easy way to handle .SRT files and forced subs in conjunction with soft subs.

If the whole thing sounds like a PITA, it is. My solution is for Blurays where I must have subtitles (speaking Klingon) I do the above process. For everything else I ignore subtitles; just too much work for functionality I'll likely never use/need.

The nightlies can pass VOBSUB subtitles through to MP4 as well (it just defaults to Burned In, but you can uncheck it).
0.9.4 can't do that, but neither can it see VOBSUB subtitles in MKV files so it's irrelevant in this scenario.

That being said, very few devices support VOBSUB in MP4 so you're better off burning them in.

They don't. VLC and MPlayer do. TBH, I don't know of any actual device that supports it, though I guess some "Nero Digital" compliant devices might.
