Curious - Plays well in MCP, badly in WMP

Post by DullingWine »

Hello

First - thanks so much to the Handbrake devs - I switched to 0.9.4 after an unsuccesful experience with an earlier version, but this one is excellent. I'm not changing any options or defaults and encoding to .mp4s and everything works sweet on films streamed to my Xbox.

A question though - I've noticed that films etc. aren't playing at all well on windows media player (WMP 12 in Windows 7). Output can be pretty pixelated with lots of lines running through it. It plays very well in Media Classic Player, so its not big deal and I'm putting down to the codec used in WMP. But does anyone know specifically what the issue is, and whether I can get it to play properly in WMP?

Thanks very much

Add weightp=0 to the x264 advanced options string.

Do note that this will probably worsen the look of fades in your encodes. This is a failing of the codec WMP uses, and hopefully it'll be fixed at some point.

Only barely. weightp 0 still does fade detection and increases the quantizers when it detects fades ("fake weightp").

Oh, didn't know that. Cool.
