Quality Variance Using High Profile Preset (0.9.4)

Post by Stever »

Hey everyone,

I upgraded to 0.9.4 (from 0.9.3) and have been seeing some serious quality variances when using the High Profile preset. I've ripped a couple feature length films that came out beautiful (love the smaller size!!), yet when I'm ripping episodes of Magnum PI they look horrible. Lots of tearing and artifacts. I don't understand why there would be such a difference in quality when I'm using the same preset for all my rips. I'm clearly no A/V expert.

I appreciate all the hard work that's been put into the software, but I'm frustrated with the Normal and High Profile presets because of their inconsistency on my end. I rip all media to be played on my PS3 and was using 0.9.3 for quite some time. With 0.9.3, I simply used the PS3 preset for everything and it worked wonderfully on everything I threw at it, including feature length films and 1970 TV episodes. I didn't have to worry about customizing anything and I really liked not having to worry about that seeing as I'm not much of an A/V expert and I really don't want to have to become one. I've read several times here on the forum that, for those who were using the PS3 preset in 0.9.3, the new High Profile preset in 0.9.4 should work fine. Well, in my experience, sometimes it works great and other times the results or terrible.

How can I reproduce consistent, quality results in 0.9.4 without having to manually tweak settings each time I go to rip something? Should I simply go back to 0.9.3? I'd rather not, but I need simple operation and consistent results without having to tweak. The PS3 preset in 0.9.3 gave me that. How can I get there in 0.9.4?

Thus far, I've ripped three feature-length films that all came out great using High Profile: 9, Weather Girl, Drag Me to Hell.

I've also ripped five eps of Magnum PI - using both the NORMAL and HIGH PROFILE presets - and they've all come out horrible -- much lower quality than the first five seasons I'd completed using the PS3 preset in 0.9.3.

I've included logs below for the film 9 and one of the Magnum eps, both using the HIGH PROFILE preset. I'm sorry, but I simply don't have any logs of Magnum rips using 0.9.3 and the PS3 preset as I didn't realize the importance of creating/keeping them before I came here looking for help. I hope this doesn't negate me from receiving your assistance.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

-Stever

Stever wrote: I upgraded to 0.9.4 (from 0.9.3) and have been seeing some serious quality variances when using the High Profile preset.
This isn't an issue of quality variance; serious artifacts indicate that the preprocessing/filtering is going wrong. Post some screenshots of the artifacts, and/or a short sample of the source (you can upload it to Mediafire).

Re: Quality Variance Using High Profile Preset (0.9.4)

Post by Stever »

Sorry for the delay in my response, it's been a rather crazy weekend. I've been doing more testing. At the time of my post, my PS3 was dead-in-the-water awaiting a replacement hard drive. The quality problem I described was experienced on my Win7 box playing via Windows Media Player. As I continued to test, I discovered the following...
  • On Win7 Box: playing Magnum eps ripped via 0.9.4 using NORMAL and HIGH PROFILE presets all looked terrible with Windows Media Player
  • On Win7 Box: playing the same Magnum eps with Nero ShowTime, both look fantastic - as good or better than the other Magnum eps ripped via 0.9.3 using PS3 preset
  • On WinXP Laptop: playing the same Magnum eps with Windows Media Player, both look fantastic
  • On PS3: After replacing hard drive this weekend, the 0.9.4-ripped Magnum eps look fantastic
So, after additional testing, it appears that whatever is going on is specific to my Win7 box and Windows Media Player. I just don't understand what it is about these 0.9.4-ripped files that is causing WMP fits. Three other feature-length films (9, Weather Girl, Drag Me to Hell) I've ripped with 0.9.4 on HIGH PROFILE preset look wonderful played with WMP on the same Win7 box.

I'll upload a few screen shots as requested. Thanks for the feedback!

Add weightp=0 to the x264 advanced options string.

Thanks, Rodeo. I'll give it a try and report back. Can I ask... will this option have any significant effect, positive or negative, in the output quality or time-to-rip process?

Thanks!

Ah, that might explain it. Maybe the decoder on his Win7 box doesn't support weightp. But shouldn't the decoder, whatever it is, be listed on DS's page?

Stever, do you know what H.264 decoder you're using? The default Win7 one?

I'm sorry, but I don't know what decoder I'm using. I'm simply opening the video file with WMP. For what it's worth, other than AnyDVDHD and HandBrake, I've installed no other "decoder" software on my Win7 box that I can think of. If I can ask... if other movies decoded/ripped in the exact same manner with the exact same HandBrake presets (normal & high profile) play fine in WMP on my Win7 box, why would there be a difference in playback with these Magnum eps in Win7 WMP?
