Post by jranaudo »

Anyway I can get the preset file back? I found it in the wiki but not the file. Why was it removed?

0.9.4 release announcement wrote: There are no more Film, Animation, or Television presets. Instead of a confusing series of content-targeted presets, there is now a single, constant quality, High Profile preset with automated filtering and all the H.264 bells and whistles. This preset should work on the PS3 and 360 too, although we make no promises.

i can confirm that the new default High Profile setting does NOT work for the xbox...

i, as many of you, was also concerned when i noticed my blessed xbox profile was missing but plowed headlong into the new 64-bit build with great expectations.

10 superman returns chapter tests later and i got fed up. not one of them worked on the xbox. i kept hoping it was an audio setting but even with NO audio they still wouldn't play.

so i put 0.9.3 back on (thank crom the internet has a long memory) and it works fine with the High Profile setting. interesting.

seems it might have something to do with the strict anamorphic setting. the default i think is loose and the xbox doesn't appreciate it, at least in my tests. so i went in and left the high profile settings completely stock except for changing it to strict anamorphic and it works. well, when i say it works, that is that the movie plays on the xbox but everyone looks quite a bit thinner (the aspect ratio is messed or something).

so, long story short, i've gone back to 0.9.3 for the time being. if someone has any tips for getting 0.9.4 to work with the default settings with a tweak or two on the xbox 360 i'd love to hear them!

HandBrake 0.9.3 has no High Profile preset.

HandBrake 0.9.3 has no High Profile preset.
don't know what to tell you. i downloaded 0.9.3 and ran it from the disk image and it had all of the NEW presets in it and not the old ones i was looking for. after a few tests i fully deleted 0.9.4 and put 0.9.3 into my applications folder and the next time i ran it it had the OLD presets in it. that's when i just went back to using the xbox preset.

i will get a log from a superman chapter on 0.9.4...

i did try the normal preset a few times at when i first started lastnight and they also didn't work but i can try one again.

You seem to have missed the part where we explained that we don't own or care to support these devices because of their poor standards support. If HandBrake's normal, standards-based, main-profile h.264 and aac in mp4 output does not work, maybe you should be complaining to the people you paid hundreds of dollars to for a media playing device -- not us.

wow.

Rodeo, i just ran a test on the new build with the high profile settings and for whatever reason, unlike the 10 i tried last night, this one plays. the anamorphic is still not right and stuff is stretched, but now it actually plays. i even dug out some of the test clips i made last night to see if i was crazy and i'm not, they don't play at all. i have the activity log from the last clip that does play tho.

Re: 0.94..what happened to xbox 360 preset

hellbent wrote:don't know what to tell you. i downloaded 0.9.3 and ran it from the disk image and it had all of the NEW presets in it and not the old ones i was looking for.
This is because 0.9.3 and 0.9.4 look for presets in the same place (~/Library/Application Support/Handbrake/) and while upgrading to 0.9.4 will prompt you to update the built in presets, reverting back to 0.9.3 will not. This is a very bad thing, and the topic of one of the questions in our FAQ.

Short answer is, unless Handbrake automatically asks you to do so, you MUST ensure that you update your built in presets when upgrading/downgrading.

well, the good news there is that i definitely HAD updated my presets for my round of 10 incompatible files since there was no xbox profile. but this does explain how i was able to use the High Profile in the 0.9.3 version of the app from within the disk image because i hadn't deleted 0.9.4.

Hello everyone,

In regards to the 360 and video playback, I'd like to point you here:

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/n ... ckfaq.aspx

Considering that the 360 is the most popular stb video playback device in the world, I think it would be worth considering putting some decent presets in the new releases.

If you have any questions about the 360 and video playback, I'm sure I can find you some answers.

The problem has never been a question of not being able to find documentation, it's been of finding people technically savvy enough to test settings for the game consoles.

The Xbox 360 is the most popular set-top box in the world? Link please, as this is news to me.

If I have any questions about the 360's video playback, I can google for myself.

Listen TedJ, you clearly aren't bending to the will of the non-existent consumer here.

31 million as of August 27, 2009 via http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6216343.html

I think its fairly easy to say its the most popular x264 capable stb.

----

Anyways, the normal settings in 0.94 work alright for me for the most part(had a couple issues but I'll save that for another time). I just thought it might be worth considering putting some decent presets in the next release.

I'd be happy to help test settings in my spare time.

Funny, that article at gamespot is stubbornly referring to it as a console... perhaps they didn't get the memo. I would wager that for every person using the Xbox 360 to play/stream video, at least 10 are using it to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

If there were in fact 31 million people using this console for video, we would most likely have found the one person (apparently) who also has experience in encoding using x264. Technically speaking, every user is testing a preset... just see how quickly the forum fills with complaints if a PS3/Xbox firmware update breaks playback. What we've never been able to find was a single person capable of independently testing (usually a process of trial and error) encoder settings to determine exactly why it broke and offer a fix.

As has been stated many times before, none of the current developers own or have access to these consoles which makes it both difficult and unreasonable to maintain a suitable device preset. We're hoping with our new preset import/export code for the community to fill the void, although based on previous experience I'm not overly confident this will happen.

So guess what?

We've already explained the reasons we dropped the video game presets. We have told you we are not personally interested or capable of supporting this device. Demanding that other people do work for you, for free, against their will, is absurd.

How does the number of people with the device change this fact? What is the point of showing us incomplete tech specs we already were obviously aware of? Did you think the old preset wasn't based on those specs? Do you think we had no support issues by following MS's public specs? Are you incapable of reading the forum archives?.
