iPod Touch / iPhone preset
Having just updated to 0.9.4 and transcoded a DVD, I find that the built-in preset for iPod Touch / iPhone gives an output file of about 9MB per minute of playing time, so it takes up more room on my device than before. Under previous versions of Handbrake the iPod Touch/iPhone (notwithstanding the new preset using quality settings rather than fixed bit rate), it was typically half that size or less and I thought that the quality was already as good as it needed to be for viewing on those devices. In that case, what was the thinking behind the new preset that doubles the output file size? I know I could play around with the slider myself, but I like to understand the preset because honestly it came from wiser folk than me.
Or am I hallucinating?

I do understand the question. However, it is nonsensical. You're asking why i made the preset create output 2x as large as the old preset when I didn't do that. I made it quality based. As you read in the documentation, that means output size is unpredictable and based on the source. It is beyond meaningless for you to say the preset creates output twice the size as the old when the old one always produced output at the same size regardless of the source and the new one varies size on every single encode. Again, what part of quality based encoding don't you understand? I don't really care whether or not you think that question is rude, because quite frankly until you tell me what you don't understand about quality based encoding, there is no question here to answer.

Now I see why you're so sore - you were the author of the preset. Don't worry, your preset is just fine.
We all know it's hard to predict the size of one constant quality transcode, but when you try the settings a few times you can get the idea of whether the file sizes tend to be larger or smaller than another given setting (noise, complexity etc.). It's not random, it's determined by the source and the settings. For this preset, for a given source DVD, the output file is generally bigger than before. The quality settings play a large part in that. You chose them. I'm sure you had your thought process but if you want to keep to yourself then no problem.

The easiest way to decrease the file size is to lower the constant quality. You do this by raising the RF value from 20 to for example 21. You can also add ":mbtree=1" without the quotes at the end of the option string which you will find on the advanced tab. It then reads:
These settings are a bit much to explain, but if you want an overview, go visit http://mewiki.project357.com/wiki/X264_Settings . On one hand you lower the quality by raising the RF and on the other hand you kick in macroblock tree ratecontrol which will offer better compression. The reason why that isn't in there by default is because it might have strange effects when you don't use b-frames. Now, your iPod probably can't handle b-frames, so don't try to turn those on. You simply force mbtree to help you out even if it shouldn't, but the results should be just fine.
Given these two changes, you might already get a file that is 30 to 50% smaller in size.

Are you sure mbtree must be forced? It works for me by default (verified with AVInaptic).

Hmm, might be. My information on mbtree is quite old. I know that it is enabled whenever using b-frames, but I have not tested it in the last few weeks whether or not it is on without b-frames. Might be my mistake! Nevertheless, having it in the settings strings does no harm, so in the case that it is disabled it will nog surely be enabled . Thanks for the information though, will surely check this out!

1) Create a Custom preset that give you what you want: Better balance between size and Quality (probably your best bet).
2) Live with the bigger file sizes and move on.
3) Find an App that does a better job than HB for the price (pretty much impossible)
Nobody has to explain anything to anybody, especially when they doing all of this in their own time, of their own free will and for no monetary gain. If you don't like the attitude, don't like the answers or don't like whatever, feel free to go elsewhere, I wish you luck.

x264 always defaults to mbtree on. Previous snapshots of HandBrake would override that and disabled mbtree when bframes were off, due to the fact that mbtree without bframes would tend to lower the quality of fades. Since x264 added fade detection (same commit as weighted p-frame prediction), HandBrake follows the x264 defaults and mbtree is on by default regardless of whether bframes are enabled or not.kvaruni wrote:Hmm, might be. I didn't say I wasn't trying to be rude, I said I don't care if you think my question is rude, because the fact is, you need to tell me what you don't understand about constant quality rate encoding so I can try to explain this to you. So which is it? Is the output file merely generally bigger than before, or is it, as you claimed earlier, "typically" twice as large as before?
Unlike you, I've decided to do some actual testing and provide evidence of my claims.
Because your initial post claims you are getting larger files than you did with 0.9.3, I decided to use 0.93's iPhone preset for testing. This leads to a bit of a puzzle for me. You claim you've been using the preset for multiple versions and that it used a fixed bit rate ("Under previous versions of Handbrake the iPod Touch/iPhone (notwithstanding the new preset using quality settings rather than fixed bit rate), it was typically half that size or less") only the iPhone preset changed drastically in 0.9.3 and used CRF even then. In any case, here are my results comparing 0.9.3's preset vs. 0.9.4's:

Now, maybe you weren't using 0.9.3's iPhone preset. Maybe you were using the entirely unsupported legacy iPhone preset. Only....that one set an average bitrate of 960kb/s, higher than the encoded bitrate of *any* variation I just tested.
If you don't want me to be rude, provide a more convincing argument.

Flame war aside on how my intellect is inferior to a developer. (That's why I'm here ya know?) My problem with the new Ipod Touch presets resides in the inability of my Android device to play the new encryption presets. Is there a simple, polite fix to set up the prior presets in 0.9.3? Thanks for the hard work and the great program. Really....big fan.

I've converted a few videos with this preset, is there a reason why 2 pass isn't an option anymore?

Fraid not. The presets would need to be changed to work with the new build of x264. You can't just use 0.9.3 presets.to set up the prior presets in 0.9.3

2-pass was not an option for the 0.9.3 iPhone preset either, since, as I noted above, it was also CRF.

Then you were either using an out of date preset from 0.9.2, or experienced a cosmetic Windows GUI placebo bug that left the option selectable even though it would have no effect.
