The strange thing to me is that my understanding is that the Touch 2G has a 133MHz bus (vs. 100MHz on the iPhone/Touch 1G) and a faster-clocked CPU (667 MHz vs. 533), with a performance profile very close to that of the 3GS. I can't understand why Apple would "bless" the 3GS and not the Touch 2G unless there is some other "secret sauce" in the 3GS with some sort of higher-end H.264 hardware-assist that was needed for b-frames (and CABAC?). And is the Touch 3G (the new 64GB model) the same CPU as the 2G or is it the 3GS hardware "unadvertised"?

Speaking of...anyone tried CABAC on the 3GS? =)

Lord, this is confusing. *laughs*

well, as far as the iPod touch 2G, here is what I tried and got zilch:
Universal preset with one change for each encode:
1. bframes=1
2. cabac=1

Than in the interest of trying to catch apple with a "gotcha" I tried each above and added the old iPod atom just for kicks. No go either.

@rhester

1st generation: ARM11 620 MHz (underclocked to 400 MHz, then 412 MHz)

2nd generation: ARM11 620 MHz (underclocked to 533MHz)[1],

with internal ARM7 core for Jazelle acceleration

3rd generation: ARM Cortex-A8 833 MHz (underclocked to 600MHz)

Ah, very good data. Sounds all-but-certain then that this is definitely exclusive to the 3GS.

Is it safe to say the iPod Touch 64GB is ARM11 as well?

LONG overdue update: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?p=21364

Any data on CABAC and weighted prediction on the 3GS would be much appreciated, as well as *anything* on the new Nano.

If wikipeida is correct, all the 3rd gen iPod touches have the Cortex chip, which, in theory means it can also playback bframes etc. I'm not sure the 8GB model is actually a 3rd gen unit though.

Yes, CABAC works on my 3GS. I successfully synced this encode I did back in July with SVN 2691 using these settings:

Code: Select all

ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=3:me=umh:subq=7:b-adapt=2:8x8dct=1:direct=auto:analyse=all

I only wish it allowed HD resolutions to be transferred to the phone... then I wouldn't have to encode two files from my Bluray/HDDVD rips anymore.

This is definitely interesting news, and I just might start re-encoding to take advantage of some of the advanced options that weren't available before.

I read somewhere (need to find the source) that the 32GB and 64GB models have the same CPU as the 3GS.

I am assuming that applies to 2G - my 32GB 1G definitely has the older processor (I checked with SysInfo).

So back to my original question: Would you use the universal preset or the Apple TV preset now that we have a choice?

Oh, that's easy. Given the choice definitely use the AppleTV preset. Same or better quality at a (sometimes much) lower file size == more movies synced. Imo, its a no brainer.

Question is, will this have a dramatic effect on battery life if it's requiring more processor power to decode? Given the iPhones/Touch poor battery life as is, I think it would be nice if someone did some tests in terms of battery life.

I am assuming that applies to 2G - my 32GB 1G definitely has the older processor (I checked with SysInfo).

I was specifically talking about the new 3G iPod Touch just released. From the ifixit.com teardown, the new iPod Touch actually has a slightly different CPU than the 3GS:
339S0075 ARM
Is this a new, faster processor? The processor on the last iPod touch (2nd gen) was labelled 339S0048ARM. The processor in the iPhone 3GS is marked 339S0073ARM.

I didn't think about that...

True, but here was my thinking:

If I am going to use it for portable use, I would use the specific iPhone preset anyway. If I am using it to output to a tv from my iPod, then I have the component adapter which means I have ac power anyway.

For portability obviously use the specific iPhone preset in any case.

Yeah I wouldn't really use it to watch the videos specifically on the iPhone as such.

But when I go away I often sync videos to my iPhone either to watch on the train, or to watch on TV (I carry the video cable with me) but as most of my videos have been encoded for the ATV I haven't been able to do this much. So all in all this is a nice change for me :)

Did a few tests with a friend's 3GS (the swine). Hardly exhaustive, but maybe it'll help.

Test scene was chapter 18 of the PAL Spiderman DVD, a relatively high-motion scene. Started from the AppleTV preset (so it's anamorphic SD) in his Hanbrake (svn2773) and bumped a few things up. Basically, CABAC, weightb, and b-pyramid all seem to work great.

Changes made: ref=5:bframes=6:weightb=1:direct=auto:b-pyramid=1:cabac=1
Result: Syncs and plays fine. Smooth as butter, and seeking is fast.

We hit a wall at 6 reference frames, with iTunes refusing to sync it. If there's anything anyone wants to know, we can probably do a few more tests.

Hey, I was able to encode with these settings and successfully transfer to iPhone 3GS. Played smoothly and quality looked great.

Starting from Animation Preset,
Constant Quality was set to 62
ref=5:mixed-refs=1:bframes=6:weightb=1:direct=auto:b-pyramid=1:me=umh:analyse=all:8x8dct=1:trellis=1:nr=150:no-fast-pskip=1:deblock=2,2:psy-rd=1,1:subq=9:no-dct-decimate=1

I haven't tested it yet, but if the 3GS can indeed play movies with weighted b-frames smoothly, then it's more capable than QuickTime 7 (well, up to a point) :-)

Fortunately there isn't even a bit of QuickTime on the iPhone :wink:

QuickTime is fine for me? Maybe the gpu playback isn't affected by the same issues? Or I have low standards.

Anyone have some suggestions for legal HD source material, and/or settings to test it with? Realise iTunes won't sync it, but I'm sure it'll play from doc sharing apps.

Well, isn't QuickTime X (according to Apple's marketing back when Snow Leopard was first previewed) supposedly using some technology derived from the iPhone OS? Of course QuickTime 7 and X aren't quite the same app when it comes to H.264 playback…
