Yet Another Dark Video Question

Post by auctoris »

First of all, yes, I have searched the forums and read everything I could find on the dark video problem. However, none of the posts I read provided a solution.

When I updated Handbrake from 0.9.2 to 0.9.3, it began encoding everything way too dark. Every video I encoded before 0.9.3 looks great. And yes, my display is calibrated. I can play the DVD on the same display and it looks fine. When I play the Handbrake encoded file, it is way too dark. I'm using the exact same encode settings that I have always used.

Is there a solution for this? I've read several possible reasons why it could be doing this, but I've never found a solution. Any help would be great! My system specs and activity log are included below.

Thanks

Apple PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz
Mac OS X 10.5.6
HandBrake 0.9.3
VLC 0.9.2

....but if you read the related threads then you know very well that this is only one of several questions I've been asking.

- Are you displaying the DVD with its proper color matrix?
- Are you displaying the encode in a video player that respects signaled color matrices?
- Are you displaying both in the exact same playback environment: same hardware, same cables, same *software* all the way through?
- Is your playback environment properly calibrated?

Um, except if you read the related threads, you know that people were reporting dark video long *before* 0.9.3 which is why now HB signals the proper DVD color matrix...it's like there's no way to win.

QuickTime sometimes shows a darker picture, usually if you resize the window the problem goes away.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
jbrjake wrote:Are you displaying the DVD with its proper color matrix?
I am playing the DVD on the same player I have always played the DVD on. Whether it has a "proper color matrix", I have no idea. It has always displayed videos the same and HandBrake had always displayed videos the same. Nothing has changed and now HandBrake videos are darker.
jbrjake wrote:Are you displaying the encode in a video player that respects signaled color matrices?
I have no idea. I'm playing the DVD through my G5 DVD player and I'm playing HandBrake through the same G5. I am using Front Row to play both DVDs and HandBrake videos. It has always shown video exactly the same between the DVD and HandBrake encodes. Nothing has changed and now the HandBake videos are darker.
jbrjake wrote:Are you displaying both in the exact same playback environment: same hardware, same cables, same *software* all the way through?
Yes. I am playing the DVD and the HandBrake videos on the same G5 connected to the same display using the same cables. Nothing in the set-up has changed. When I play the DVD through Front Row, it looks fine. When I play the HandBrake video through Front Row, it is too dark.
jbrjake wrote:Is your playback environment properly calibrated?
That is a most definite yes.

I apologize if my question was offensive or irritating in any way. I am simply baffled. Absolutely nothing in my set-up, playback, hardware, or anything else has changed. The only thing that has changed was updating HandBrake from 0.9.2 to 0.9.3.

Was there something done in 0.9.3 that could cause video displayed using the exact same set-up as 0.9.2 to display darker than before? I guess the way to be 100% sure is find a copy of 0.9.2 and see how it encodes the same video. I'll try that out.

Thank you

I watch everything using Front Row. I don't think there is a way to resize the window. If there is, please let me know.

Re: Yet Another Dark Video Question

Post by auctoris »

Finally, I have narrowed it down to HandBrake 0.9.3. I got 0.9.2 working again and here are the results of my tests:

HandBrake 0.9.2 Encode
  • Front Row: Matches source DVD
  • VLC: Matches source DVD
HandBrake 0.9.3 Encode
  • Front Row: Much darker than DVD. Too dark.
  • VLC: Matches source DVD
ffmpegX Encode
  • Front Row: Matches source DVD
  • VLC: Matches source DVD
My system configuration is identical to what it has always been. I'm encoding and playing the media all on the exact same equipment. Given these test results under the described conditions, I can only conclude that 0.9.3 is doing something to the video that makes it much darker when played through QuickTime based software. Does anyone know what 0.9.3 is doing that 0.9.2 was not doing? Can 0.9.3 be configured to stop doing it?

My only solution for now is to use 0.9.2 or ffmpegX, but I would really like to use 0.9.3 if possible.

Thank you

System Configuration
  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz / 3.5GB RAM
  • Mac OS X 10.5.6
  • HandBrake 0.9.2/0.9.3
  • VLC 0.9.8 (Latest release as Universal Binary. Required for PPC.)
  • Perian 1.1.3
  • QuickTime 7.6
  • Front Row 1.0
  • Toshiba Regza 42HL67 LCD TV (Connected via DVI-to-HDMI)

Uh huh...but Apple's DVD Player.app is notorious for too-bright output. So how are you ascertaining that the HandBrake encode is, in fact, darker than the DVD source?

I had the same problem, especially with quicktime. I could play a video in VLC and it would be brighter than the same video played in quicktime which would be too dark. By adjusting the settings on the TV to get the video correct then everything else would be too bright.

What I eventually found is that for some reason quicktime takes account of your Gamma setting and adjusts its output accordingly.

I can't remember exactly what settings I used and can't seem to find the current gamma setting, but basically open a quicktime movie then gointo display calibration, I think you require a gamma of 2.2 or more, but as you create the calibration the quicktime movie will change.

Then you may need to calibrate your TV back to the new settings.

If I remember right it was a pain in the a** to do an I ended up with about a dozen calibrations before hitting on the perfect one but it was worth it as no more dark movies :)

Examples of HB 0.9.3 (Universal) Darkness on G5

Post by auctoris »

As I mentioned in a previous thread, my HandBrake encodes began coming out very dark as soon as I started using HB 0.9.3. These encodes were created and played on the same equipment, using the same system config, using the same HB settings, and are being displayed on the same calibrated monitor (see below for system config). The 0.9.2 encode matches the DVD displayed on the same equipment.

The only difference between the 0.9.3 and 0.9.2 encodes is that one was encoded using HB 0.9.3 and the other was encoded using HB 0.9.2. Here are two examples showing the difference. The HB 0.9.3 encode is on the left and the HB 0.9.2 encode is on the right.

Example 1
Image

Example 2
Image

I have had to revert to HB 0.9.2 because of this problem. Below you will find the encode log for the 0.9.3 (dark version) as well as my system config used for both encodes.

Does anyone know what was done in 0.9.3 that would cause this? Is there any way to turn it off in an advanced preference somewhere? Every video I have on that machine (whether ripped myself or downloaded) as well as all DVDs I have played on it are displayed correctly on my calibrated monitor. Only the HB 0.9.3 encodes look too dark.

Thank you

Post by refulgentis »

erm, it's not QT taking note, your whole display should be noticeably changing. Note that 2.2 is said to be "PC/TV gamma".

please, everyone who is complaining about this, please note that there's very little chance (about as much that the moon is made of cheese) that HB 0.9.3 and a QuickTime based app is displaying the wrong colors. I would wager that 99% of the people complaining merely have the wrong gamma setting enabled.

Thankfully, the default gamma in Snow Leopard is finally changed to 2.2 instead of 1.8 (at least in the betas)...but I don't envy Apple support for the number of customers that will report their display was screwed up during the upgrade.

Thank you for replying. Gamma is not the issue. As I stated before, my TV is calibrated and my G5 is set to use 2.2 gamma. It is not the entire display. It is only 0.9.3 encodes playing on QuickTime based software. They look fine in VLC. HB 0.9.2 and ffmpeg encodes look just fine--like they always have. It is only 0.9.3 that is creating videos that look too dark.

I'm not a videophile but I am aware of the components that go into rendering an image on screen. After much testing, I am fairly confident this is not some missed setting. The test results suggest otherwise.

I submitted a post with example images and more info, but as of yet, it has not been posted. I hope that helps some.

Thank you

Re: Yet Another Dark Video Question

This is really getting ridiculous.

Look, before 0.9.3, as I've explained many. many times before, HandBrake did not signal a color space. This produced output that was too dark in QuickTime. So now we send the proper color space, which is indeed brighter. It is entirely up to the video player to decide how to display it. We are giving it the correct information.

In the case of QuickTime, it is entirely dependent on your system display calibration (ColorSync), unless you have FCP, in which case you can enable a preference to disable ColorSync and read with 2.2 gamma and shift to 1.8 for display.

@autocris: I don't know why you're using an NTSC CRT 2.2 gamma on an ATSC LCD TV displaying an operating system that's standardized on 1.8. That is almost certainly your problem.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I switched the gamma to 1.8 and that does indeed help the 0.9.3 encodes. However, now every other video--whether DVD or encoded--looks washed out. Is there any way around this?

Two questions.

1. Since HB is available for Windows, and PCs use a 2.2 as the default gamma, will HB videos appear dark on Windows machines as well? If not, why? What is different?

2. I know very little about color spaces, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. Does the color space HB 0.9.3 uses specify a gamma?

My only advice would be to play this on a TV display using a set-top box like ATV or PS3 or XBox. Try to eliminate the computer variable.

Thank you for replying. My G5 is my media hub so that's what I'll have to stick to. And, out of literally thousands of video files on my machine, HB 0.9.3 files are the only ones that appear dark. That's why I'm trying to understand the issue as much as I can.

Apparently, setting the display's gamma to 2.2 is a problem. If I set it to 1.8, HB 0.9.3 video looks fine but everything else looks washed out. That's why I'm interested in the answer to these two questions. But it seems that no one knows the answer. :-(

Also, I've tested several video files encoded with other application that are specifying YUV420p as the color space, and they look fine at 2.2 gamma. If signaling the proper color space is what is causing the issue, I don't understand why it's not doing it for files not encoded with HB 0.9.3. So it is getting even more confusing to me.

But I'll ask the questions again. Maybe someone who knows the answer will reply:

1. Since HB is available for Windows, and PCs use a 2.2 as the default gamma, will HB videos appear dark on Windows machines as well? If not, why? What is different?

2. I know very little about color spaces, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. Does the color space HB 0.9.3 uses (YUV420) specify a gamma?

In the mean time, I'll keep using HB 0.9.2.

Thank you

What you're saying doesn't even make sense. Why are you fixating on YUV420? The planar layout of the video has absolutely nothing to do with this.

I keep telling you again and again this is about the signaled color matrix of Bt.601.

auctoris, what you may not be understanding is that YUV420 is not a complete specification of a colour space. It only defines how the colour planes are arranged in the pixmap. The colour space specification is what jbrjake keeps pointing to, Bt 601 and Bt 709. If you really want to get into the details, try reading this http://www.faqs.org/faqs/graphics/colorspace-faq/.

Re: Yet Another Dark Video Question

Post by jbrjake »

i was working under the assumption autocris had taken the time to do rudimentary googling already. Maybe this was being optimistic?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_space
A color model is an abstract mathematical model describing the way colors can be represented as tuples of numbers, typically as three or four values or color components (e.g. RGB and CMYK are color models). However, a color model with no associated mapping function to an absolute color space is a more or less arbitrary color system with no connection to any globally-understood system of color interpretation.

Adding a certain mapping function between the color model and a certain reference color space results in a definite "footprint" within the reference color space. This "footprint" is known as a gamut, and, in combination with the color model, defines a new color space. For example, Adobe RGB and sRGB are two different absolute color spaces, both based on the RGB model.
Since "color space" is a more specific term for a certain combination of a color model plus a color mapping function, the term "color space" tends to be used to also identify color models, since identifying a color space automatically identifies the associated color model. Informally, the two terms are often used interchangeably, though this is strictly incorrect. For example, although several specific color spaces are based on the RGB model, there is no such thing as the RGB color space.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma_correction
In most computer systems, images are encoded with a gamma of about 0.45 and decoded with a gamma of 2.2; in Macintosh systems, the corresponding typical values are 0.55 and 1.8. In any case, binary data in still image files (as JPEG) are explicitly encoded (that is, they carry gamma-encoded values, not linear intensities), as are motion picture files (such as MPEG). The system can optionally further manage both cases, through color management, if a better match to the output device gamma is required.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p ... ost1090068
Summary:
-using the wrong colorspace will have the effect of making some colors brighter or darker than they should be. It is usually most noticeable on reds and greens. There are examples for both normal and improperly handled SD and HD on these links:
http://www.gadgetbench.com/colormatrixerrors/, http://www.sigmadesigns.com/public/S...omaticity.html, http://www6.impacthosting.com/trbarr...9ToBT601.2.jpg

-DVD specifications have contradicted the MPEG-2 specs in the past
-there may be a conflict between the DVD specs and MPEG-2 specs in regards to colorimetry
-Windows display drivers and video renderers (VMR7, VMR9, ATI and nVidia drivers) tend to follow the rule of BT.601 for < 720p content and BT.709 for >= 720p content
-DVD players and ATSC HDTVs tend to follow the rule of BT.601 for < 720p content and BT.709 for >= 720p content
-DGMPGDec/DGINDEX versions before 1.5.0 beta 12 defaulted to reporting BT.709 when colorimetry information was not specified by 'sequence_display_extension'
-DGMPGDec/DGINDEX versions starting with 1.5.0 beta 12 (released Nov 9, 2007)(including the current 1.5.0 RC2), report BT.709* for HD video and BT.470-2* [aka BT.601] for SD video when colorimetry information is not specified by 'sequence_display_extension'. The asterisk (*) means the stream did not declare the colorimetry.

For VCD and MPEG-1 content, it appears that: BT.601 is always used

For DVD MPEG-2 content, it appears that: BT.601 is usually used (720x480) (often called 480p). If 'sequence_display_extension' is not specified, assume BT.601.

For ATSC MPEG-2 digital TV content, it appears that:
-BT.601 is used for SDTV (standard definition) (480i, 480p). For SD content, if 'sequence_display_extension' is not specified, assume BT.601 (this is per ATSC Standards
A/53, Part 4:2007)
-BT.709 is used for HDTV (high definition) (720p and 1080i). For non-SD (i.e. HD) content, if 'sequence_display_extension' is not specified, assume BT.709 (this is per ATSC Standards A/53, Part 4:2007)
http://www.gadgetbench.com/colormatrixerrors/
Just as the English and metric systems are two ways of representing distance, RGB and YCbCr are two ways of representing color. RGB represents all visible colors as a combination of red, green, and blue values. YCbCr on the other hand represents color as a combination of a single luminance value (the black and white portion of the image) and two values for the chroma (color) portion of the image.

There are several advantages to the YCbCr representation of color. For one it's how color TV signals are compatible with black and white TVs. For another the human eye is able to resolve less color detail than luminance detail so separating them makes it easy to reduce or increase the chroma resolution as bandwidth or storage space allows. This chroma resolution is what those 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0, etc. numbers you sometimes see are referring too, but that is another topic altogether.

YCbCr is the format encoded onto DVDs and broadcast over cable, satellite, or antenna. YCbCr is the standard encoding for all analog interconnects. Digital interconnects (eg. HDMI) often carry YCbCr, but can also carry RGB signals. RGB on the other hand is how video cameras see color and how displays make color. At some point in the process of displaying an image your YCbCr signal must be converted to RGB.

A YCbCr signal is converted to RGB and back by the multiplication of the RGB or YCbCr vector by a 3 x 3 matrix informally called the "color matrix". The actual values of a color matrix are derived from the red, green, and blue primaries of a particular video system. With the advent of HD (sometimes called Rec. 709) the specified primaries were changed to create a wider color gamut than SD (sometimes called Rec. 601).

This may not help mac users, but perhaps will be useful to PC folks who find this thread...

I came up with a workaround for the darkness issue I'm pretty happy with so I thought I'd share it.

I tried using ffdshow tryouts for playback video decoding (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/) and found that it has a 'Luminance level fix' feature that restores the brightness of my HB 0.9.3 .mp4 DVD rips compared to the DVD source (IMHO).

Cheers.
