Trim movie before encoding - with preview.

Post by peter_h »

I've partially come over from Recode encoding, and find I really miss this feature that's unavailable in HB.

Nothing flash - I'm not suggesting cutting out and re-assembling bits from sections within the movie - just a straight trim off the start and the end of the clip.

I use it to trim off all the promo bits at the start of movies, and the repeated opening signature from TV episodes. I also end-trim the credits off movies - sometimes they can be 5 minutes of just music over a text crawl. A waste of space really, as I always cut short the credits when I'm watching and they start playing.

Dunno much about what's in the upcoming "live preview" feature, but it would be great to incorporate this trimming feature with that, so you can see where you're starting and ending. In fact, it would be hard for this feature to be usable without live preview.

Thanks for listening, and for HB so far. :)

HandBrake is a transcoder, not a video editor.

There has been some work in narrowing the scope of encoding to allow for arbitrary start/end points, but there are issues with the approach that have not been ironed out and it is not considered a high priority. Translation: You'll probably see this someday.

It was added 11 months ago to the repository; there just haven't been any public releases since. But there are nightly builds now, which have all this stuff in.

I'm adding my voice to this long-awaited feature, for a good reason: us Mac users miss a .ts editor to get rid of unwanted start/end bits of a recording.
There used to be MPEG Streamclip, but it deals only with mpeg2 streams, which left us dry on mpeg4 streams. :(
Currently, French TV providers (I'm French  ) transmit only those .ts mpeg4 streams.
So, ok, HandBrake is not an editor, but a real trimming with preview would really be a welcome addition...

... long awaited feature ...
Perhaps you missed this:

You're waiting for an editing feature that is already available in editors.

Perhaps you missed this:

:D

• HandBrake allows encoding from frame x through frame y
• HandBrake has already a Preview function
=> so it doesn't seem impossible to combine both functions to have a trimming preview — and I don't consider start/end trimming as "editing" (as I've been a video editor for ten years, myself... )

But ok, don't bother answering, I was just giving my point of view.
I'm really happy HandBrake exists, anyway. :)

No one said it was impossible. You're welcome to provide a patch and ongoing support for all platforms.
