Shouldn't HB be using all my cores?

I have an 8 core 2006 Mac Pro, and encodes are only using around 30% of my total processes. Is there a way to max them out? It seems like before I updated to the newest version of the software, it used more of my processing power. Thanks. And I don't know much about how the software works, so I appreciate the kid-glove treatment that you'll have to give me.

In case it matters, I'm encoding my DVDs with the quicktime preset. 2000kbps average bitrate, 2 pass encoding, turbo first pass. MP4, framerate = same as source,

You'll probably find that your optical drive is acting as a bottleneck, so your cores are idling waiting for data to arrive. This is one reason why it's a good idea to pre-rip to HDD where possible.

MacTheRipper may work, although many newer Region 1 releases will stymie all but the 3.0 beta releases of MTR. You may also want to look at RipIt, a commercial ripping app with frequent updates.

thanks, I'll check it out.

edit: looks like one can use ripit and watch the dvd's on their computer just like if they were watching off the dvd. is the advantage of using handbrake only to make a smaller and/or ipod compatible video? because I don't watch videos on my ipod. I want to put my movies on my laptop so i can watch them while travelling.

And so when you say the encodes are only using 30% of your processing power, you're basing this off of....?

That's correct. HandBrake re-encodes the DVD source to MPEG-4 so that it can be played on devices such as the AppleTV or an iPod.

If you've got enough disk space and only need to watch your DVD on your laptop, then there's no need to use HandBrake, as RipIt's output will play using Apple's DVD player application.

thanks rodeo. I like that i can get pretty decent quality at about 1.5GB as opposed 4 or 8 on a straight rip. I think I'll stick to handbrake-ing them. But I would imagine I could cut lots of daytime work by getting ripit, which takes a lot less time than handbrake encoding, then setting up a handbrake queue after I've got a bunch of them ripped and ready to encode, huh?

But you said you're getting different usage in different passes, and you're only giving one number....

OK. I see. with those settings, it uses around 30% on the first pass, which shows up as ~275% in the processes window. Kicks up to around 350% in second pass. 800% would be total processes

edit: uses processors better (~600%) when I set it to constant bitrate of 62%

RipIt just rips the movie to disk (and removes copy protection), it doesn't encode (so you get what's on the DVD, but on your hard disk).

And obviously, pre-ripping with RipIt will save you time, for the reasons you just mentioned.

I don't think it will. I can do an encode in about 30-40 minutes, depending on the length of the movie. I did buy ripit, and it takes 40-50 minutes to rip a whole dual layer dvd. so, I guess I wasted that money... unless there's a way to rip JUST the feature, and none of the extra stuff.

Well, if HandBrake encodes that fast from the physical DVD, then maybe not. I only have a dual-core iMac… that being said, using a DVD ripping application gives you the flexibility of ripping first and encoding later.

30-40 minutes for a rip? That seems like quite awhile. What drive does that have (manufacturer)? Are you using an external?

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D internal drive. shipped with my 2006 mac pro. it has a transfer rate of ~3.3 M/s at the beginning of the disc, slowly getting faster as it reaches ~6.5 M/s at the outer areas of the DVD.

edit: the disc drive doesn't really ramp up during the rip. I would think that it should, right? it does when I have used mac the ripper.

I use mac the ripper pretty exclusively, but I do have Rip-it for those stubborn movies. My rips usually take about half the time. I called home this morning and asked my much more attractive second half to time a rip of a DVD I had left sitting on the desk (yes, my wife has become well versed in the art of ripping and encoding through me). She reported 22 minutes via MTR 3.0, with an original DVD weighing in at 7.30 GBs. If you'd like, I can rip a movie back to back tonight with both apps and see what the difference is if it would help.

that would be awesome. thank you. I don't have MTR 3. I believe mine is like 2.6.6 or something. It's the free one. I looked into getting 3.0, but what a headache with all the hoops you have to jump through! I wonder if 3.0 rips faster than the older version. Anyhow, ripping a 7.4GB video with Ripit should give me a pretty good idea. What kind of computer do you have?

edit: and let me know if your optical drive spins up fast or if it stays spinning relatively slowly/quietly, for both applications, please.

Here's the information-

I ripped 2 discs.

Disc 1 was Miracle by Disney (size- 7.17 GB)
Rip-it took 31 minutes
MTR took 33 minutes

Both discs had an approximate folder size of 7.18 GB.

Disc 2 was The Butterfly Effect - Theatrical (size- 4.21 GB)
Rip-it took 20 minutes
MTR took 21 minutes

One interesting note on The Butterfly Effect was that Rip-it came up with a folder size of 4.22 GB and MTR came up with a total folder size of 4.24 GB.

My set-up is an iMac core 2 duo 24". As an aside, MTR is going through a makeover and version 4.0 is due out soon. The developer has stated that he is devising an easier payment/activation scheme to compliment the new design. Even he has acknowledge that the current system has put off too many people (I personally never had a problem getting the program and activation license - took about 24 hrs. total to get the program up and running). But we all know how much these devs like to promise things... :lol:

Also, my DVD drive never spins up to an audible level, but this has always been the case.

If you want to see how your setup compares, the UPC for Miracle is 86936 23193 and the UPC for The Butterfly Effect is 94043 71732. Pick up either one and test your setup against mine to get an "apples to apples" idea of where you stand.

Hope this helps.

(Also, please discard the earlier time from my wife's rip. It was a movie that unbeknown to her had previously been ripped and d-toxed (DVD2oneX'ed) and thus can't realistically used in this controlled example.)

thanks a ton for the help. I appreciate it a lot. I think my optical drive is working fine. I have been doing rips this afternoon and they've been from 16 minutes for single layer DVDs to about 24 minutes for full 7+GB dual layer DVDs.

So what we learned from this was- MTR was marginally slower and produced a marginally larger DVD folder in some cases. And that means, um... (JBRJake - Feel free to insert dry, sharp, but on-point comment at this time). Night all.
