Add to Queue/Start Not Working

Post by Stuessi »

I have a strange problem on a mid-2008 Imac. For about the last month and a half, I have been unable to use Handbrake (it continues to work fine on my mid-2007 MacMini). I can add a Source no problem, adjust the settings as always, but when I click Start or Add to Queue, nothing happens. I have been through the uninstall/reinstall process with no luck. I also tried an older version of Handbrake (0.92) which worked fine. It seems as if something broke it in mid-March but I am at wits end to figure it out, especially as 0.92 still worked when I tried it. Below is the most recent activity log.

Can you check your individual encode log directory (right click activity window) and paste your most recent? The log you've provided only shows the initial scan.

The same thing started happening to me last night when I was trying to rip my "I, Robot" and "Planet of the Apes DVDs". Now nothing happens when I click start.

My activity log looks very similar to the above - it does the scan and then every time I hit start I just get the lines:

Code: Select all

[07:56:02] macgui: Rip: Pending queue count is 0
[07:56:02] macgui: Rip: No pending jobs, so sending this one to doAddToQueue
In my individual encode log directory there are logs for all my other DVD rips, but there's nothing for either "I, Robot" or "Planet of the Apes".

The only thing I did differently from normal was open the preferences and check 'Send to Meta X', but I unchecked that again because I thought it might be that setting that has caused Handbrake (or maybe just the GUI?) to stop working.

Thanks in advance.

I just downloaded the CLI version and it's ripping fine... in fact it is ripping at about 3 times the speed of using the GUI:

Code: Select all

Encoding: task 1 of 1, 9.92 % (66.36 fps, avg 63.82 fps, ETA 00h38m51s)
I never got that kind of speed with the GUI, I wish I'd just gone CLI in the first place. :)

You'll find that your encoding settings are not the same, and replicating those settings in-gui will present you with almost identical results to the CLI.

Really? That's worrying since:
http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/CLIGuide#presets wrote:HandBrake offers hard coded, factory-fresh presets that are exactly the same as the built-in presets in the MacGui.
I'm using the Apple TV preset with the CLI and used to use the Apple TV preset with the GUI. Haven't checked visually yet because I left it running when I headed off to work.

You wouldn't see a clock speed improvement if your settings were the same. Post a log when done for both and it'll be easy to spot.

That'll be difficult until the above problem is resolved.

I'll re-rip one of the ones that worked and post both logs. Shall I do that in a different thread, as it sounds like the presets are buggy?

Any thoughts on the GUI problem at the beginning of this thread?

Thanks in advance.

at the risk of being embarrassed by utter stupidity, the same thing happened to me for a while. add source, no problem. adjust settings no problem, but that was as far as it went.
i found that the audio bitrate had to have an actual value i.e. not blank. i don't know why the bitrate was blank but when i re-checked the preferred mixdown, the bitrate value would appear and the source would begin or add to queue.

The presets aren't buggy and I don't know why you haven't already shown us the command line string.

Sorry, I hit save rather than submit! :?

Please note that my GUI started working again - no idea why!

Anyway, here's the comparison between the CLI's "Apple TV" preset and the GUI's "Apple TV" preset. I believe they're supposed to be exactly the same, but the difference between the two is obvious both in terms of file size and visual quality.

CLI :

CLI :

Code: Select all

Um, your not using the AppleTV preset on the CLI query. It's got no space in it.

from --preset-list:
+ AppleTV: -e x264 -q 0.589999973773956 -a 1,1 -E faac,ac3 -B 160,auto -R 48,Auto -6 dpl2,auto -f mp4 -4
-X 960 -P -m -x level=30:cabac=0:ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=6:weightb=1:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:sub
q=7:analyse=all
Also, you'll note from help there is no = required. Just a space

Bingo. Problem with my custom preset, even though the exact same one works on my MacMini. Thanks!

Hi folks

For what it's worth, I might have more on the same matter
I'm using Version 0.9.3 (2008112300) on both Snow Leopard and plain Leopard

The other day i was having the exact same symptom : able to scan source, change settings and all that, but when trying to either 'start' or 'add to queue', nothing was happening.

After googling a bit, I realized the following. As long as I was using a predefined preset, everything was going fine; as soon as I wanted to use my own (which tentatively, is about having english+french audio tracks, plus english subtitles), the symptom appeared. And it occurred to me that each time the symptom was apperaing, I actually had the 'subtitle' field completely empty; that is to say, it dod not have 'none' or 'autoselect' or anything, it was plain empty; as soon as I selected, say, 'none' instead, then the symptom vanished and I could proceed.

So it seems to me that this has to do with how some presets, when applied to some dvds, result in fields being left unchosen. I've seen this with subtitle, I think I've seen somebody mentioning the same with the audio bitrate.

I guess it might help to
* at the very least issue some kind of warning when 'start' or 'add to queue' does nothing, like 'the subtitle field is empty', which would let the user figure out what's going on
* and possible review the code that applies presets, an make sure that no field is left blank like that.

I don't know the code enough to help in doing this, but am willing to give it a look if somebody can point to the right code location.
