Problem with "weird" subtitles

Post by flightsuit »

Hello,

I'm trying to copy a movie, with subtitles, from a DVD that seems to handle subtitles in a non-standard sort of a way. The DVD in question is "Gappa: The Triphibian Monsters," and it contains two separate versions of the film, one in Japanese with English subtitles, and one with dubbed English dialogue and no subs. Unlike most DVDs, where you're watching the same video regardless, and you're just selecting one language track or the other, and/or turning subs on or off, this DVD actually has two completely separate copies of the film, owing to the fact that the English version was edited differently and is slightly shorter.

My problem is that with the Japanese version, which is the one I'm trying to rip, the subtitles appear in the black stripe underneath the letter-boxed picture, as opposed to being superimposed over the picture itself. Handbrake just encodes the picture, obviously not including the black, letter-boxing areas, and the subtitles are therefore not present in Handbrake's output.

I've attempted this with "Autoselect" selected under Handbrake's "subtitles" menu and with "none" selected, and gotten the same results.

So my question is, how can I get the subs to be included with my rip and show up properly in the outputted file?

Here is the activity log:

I doubt that it's relevant, but just in case it matters, here's what the file structure looks like on that DVD:

I'm using OS X version 10.5.6 on an Intel Mac, and Handbrake version 0.9.3

Thanks so much!

What options do you get in the subtitle drop-down, other than None and Autoselect? Judging by your log, there seems to be a subtitle track in your source.

If the subtitles are burned in the Japanese version of the movie, they only way to get them will be to adjust cropping as to not remove the letterboxing…

Sounds to me like you need to disable auto crop in the picture settings, and set all factors to zero.

If the subtitles are in the orginal picture but under the image, you will loose them with auto crop on.

Alright! Nate, your answer was right on the money, and my problem's solved. Rodeo, in answer to your question, the options in the subtitles drop-down menu were "None," "autoselect," and "unknown." I just left it on "autoselect," with the image cropping values all set to zero, and everything worked fine, with the subs showing up where they're supposed to be. Thank you both for your speedy responses!

Well, at least there is a subtitle track in your file - not sure whether it is English or not.

What happens if you try encoding a test chapter, with cropping set to remove letterboxing, and the subtitle set to Unknown?
