AVI/MOV to MP4 sound problems

Post by icebiker »

Hi,

I'm trying to convert AVI and MOV files created on digital cameras to something approximating "MPEG4-Simple Profile, AVC Baseline Profile v1.2, v1.3" that my son's Walkman MP3 player wants.

Using the iPod presets, I get video that works, but the sound is completely garbled to noise that stutters on and off.

I've tried various permutations source, codec, mixdown, sample rate and bit rate with no effect. As an experiment, I used the Quicktime preset and have the same problem playing the output in Quicktime. So it seems like it just isn't working for me.

I looked through the FAQ and the documentation, and didn't see anything relevant to my problem.

Any suggestions on what I need to do to make this work?

Video formats look awfully complex. Are there any online resources that would help me decode MPEG specifications to HB settings?

Thanks for your time - icebiker

This is unfortunately a known bug in 0.9.3 fixed in development code and the next public release (no ETA, likely months away from even a beta due to major internal changes). If you feel comfortable compiling it yourself, you should be able to get correct sound from a recent SVN version.

I've got the exact same problem converting MOVies from my Panasonic digital camera. Icebiker, great job describing the problem: "sound is completely garbled to noise that stutters on and off"

Are there some alternate settings/formats that will work? I'm trying to get the movies to play on my iPhone.

Thanks.

Try using Quicktime Pro, and export to something similar.

I'm trying to convert .mp4 From my Sanyo camcorder to AppleTV, HB ends up with no audio. Passing it through Quicktime Pro or iMovie, then into HB seems to solve the problem.

Worth a try...

As Rodney pointed out above, this issue is already fixed in current development code. Fortunately, there has been a recent development snapshot which should correct this issue.
