Opening credits fade in and out in steps

Post by StudioLaguna »

Thanks for a superb app. I have done dozens of successful encodes for Apple TV and iPod touch and it screams on my MacPro 8core! I have an observation that I was wondering if anyone has seen/ has a work-around for. During opening credits (white type on black BG) there is a distinct stepping of the fade in and out of the text. It looks like four or five steps in a 16 to 20 frame transition. Out looks worse than in. It's not a big problem as it's just the credits but it is puzzling as older encodes (2 pass VBR iTunes) do not seem to have this effect. I use the Apple TV (CQ tweaked to 62%) preset. The encodes are killer otherwise. The only other issue I noticed on my latest batch of 40 encodes was audio sync leading pix by 2 to 4 frames on about 2 out of 5 encodes. But I correlated this to "older" DVDs I happened to be doing recently do save my collection from extinction due to lacquer oxidizing. I saw a crazy thread on this, going round and round with no end in sight. It's really easy to fix this in Quicktime by extracting the video trk, trimming 2 to 4 frames off the pix, pasting it back on the the audio and re-saving as a QT movie so all is right with the world. Thanks again to all developers. :D

Do you use "same as source" or do you specify a fixed framerate value?

Hmmmm. The only changes to the AppleTV preset I made (intentionally that is) is the quality setting (set to 62%). I'll check but I'm pretty sure it's same as source. The rest of the encode is always fine. Just white on black fade in and out looks stepped (not a smooth fade out as on the DVD).

You should check (and post) your activity logs.

There was an issue with weighted b-frames found in libx264 several months ago. Quick work around is to disable weighted B-frames.

More info can be found here.

This is the log from a single chapter test on a title that is a classic example of the issue. This has credits over black fading in/out and various BGs with the same rate of fade in/out. The scenes with busy BGs such as moving thru clouds the credits fade as normal. When the BG is a static shot they fade in distinct steps. I failed to mention that when played in iTunes (which I never do, so I never checked till today) they are fine. This leads me to believe that the AppleTV is having trouble with these transitions. Perhaps the data rate is too high and it's freezing a bit? Obviously a MacPro with a much better graphics card should be able to play more complex scenes. But why can't the ATV handle credits?
I did two tests. The first is the standard ATV preset. The second is my slightly tweaked 62% quality setting (up from 59%) all other settings appear to be identical.
The result is both playback with the exact same issue on ATV and fine on MacPro. Thanks for the help with this vexing phenomenon.
I will upload the encode to my iDisk and send a password protected link to whomever wishes to inspect them. They are about 80megs.

Ahh! Thanks! I'll disable weighted B frames in my HQ setting and see. Does this dramatically affect the quality? Thanks again!

Constant quality means just that, constant quality. :P

From the reports I've seen, disabling weighted b-frames will increase encode size by ~1-2%.

Re: Opening credits fade in and out in steps

Post by StudioLaguna »

Thanks! that did the trick! I'll leave weighted b-frames disables on all future encodes. I have about 150 more titles to do. The small increase in file size is not a deal breaker. I just purchased a 2T Lacie for $325 so I'm good to go.

Cheers!
