Does Apple Universal preset play on a PS3?

Im thinking of getting a PS3, currently I encode with Apple universal preset, for my iPods. Will these files play fine via a PS3? I obviously canot try it as dont have a PS3 yet, and I only want to make 1 type of encode/1 file for all

cheers

Probably not... the PS3 chokes on the embedded AC3 audio track used by the aTV/Universal presets.

Universal should include both stereo and surround tracks, and the inclusion of that surround track is what the PS3 can't handle. I cannot vouch for this since I don't own a PS3, but maybe if you just modify the universal preset by cutting out the AC3 (surrond) passthrough in the encode, then it might work.

I haven't tried the Universal preset, but the aTV minus the AC3 passthrough track does work on the PS3 last time I checked.

Thanks, so I take it I choose Apple Universal, then on the Audio+subtitles tab, make sure it only has AAC(faac) selected and not AAC(passthru) selected is this correct please?

I take it using this "modified" Apple Universal settings, will still play on touch, Xbox, Classic, nano etc?

thanks

Hey

Been a while since i have posted but i haven't seen so much speculation on a thread in a while.
I have a PS3, use it as a media centre and can say the universal preset encodes i have work fine. The PS3 just plays the AAC audio.

All this stuff about AC3 gumming the works is a little off. The PS3 can handle the codec, as it does with dvd, Blue ray etc. But at the moment it cant play that in an MP4/ M4V as in simple terms it cant see it.
The problem is the MP4 standard, currently, does not include AC3 in the container. This has been covered over and over by the good folk of this forum since apple tinkered with the format for ATV.
Good news is, if the standard is changed the PS3 will be as well. Rumor is thats the way this is going too.

The only problem I have come across is related to the resolution and that has been solved thanks to the way the universal preset deals with anamorphic output.

in short the universal works great, if that changes ill post asap

Ok got the impression that was the case from some pages i had read.
EDIT:
Ok just read the wiki for MP4 and see what you mean. Didn't realize so many different streams were supported. I stand corrected.
