Handbrake crashes on encode

Post by DeaPeaJay »

I've been having a really frustrating time with this latest handbrake (0.9.3), and my brother in law is too. For a while, *any* dvd or file I tried to encode would not rip. It would just sit there at "encoding: pass 1 of 1" and not move, even after hours. I App Zapped handbrake (got rid of application support and preference files) and redownloaded it, and then I was able to rip a dvd. But that only worked for one dvd. Now I'm trying to rip the last title of Ever After and it just crashes as it starts. I haven't tried any other DVDs yet to see if it has any problem with them.

Basically, this latest version just seem downright awful, I've never had so many problems before. I opened up handbrake 0.7.1 (collecting dust in my applications folder), and Ever After encoded right away, no problems whatsoever.

I don't know what the issue is with this latest version, but I just wanted to make it known in the hopes that it can be corrected and handbrake will be as reliable as it used to be.

Thanks for any help!

EDIT: I'm getting the activity log shortly. Just realized I need to include that
EDIT 2: I can't get the activity log because it's crashing. I recorded a movie of it crashing, with the activity log in view. I'm uploading it now, and I'll put a screenshot of the last part here too. I hope that'll be helpful.

1. Which version of OS X do you have installed? The current release of HB is for 10.5 only. The crash you are describing sounds exactly what happened to me when I tried to run 0.9.3 on a Mac running 10.4. If that's the problem, either upgrade your Mac or use HB version 9.1

2. Do you have the current version of VLC installed in your apps folder? HB now relies on VLC to decrypt DVDs.

Ok here's a movie of the crash, along with the activity log. http://www.exit42design.com/stuff/HandB ... apz001.mov

And here's a screenshot right before the crash.

I'm on 10.5.6

It does?!?! That's pretty important information, shouldn't that be included with the download or something? Or at least, tell people on the download page. I've got VLC 0.9.8, and "check for updates" tells me that's the latest version

They do tell people, right there on the front page. Scroll down to where it says "No more DVD decryption."

It confuses a lot of people though.

It's not on the download page though, and it's not obvious on the front page. Handbrake is famous for the ability to rip DVDs. But now... it doesn't. And the only way it can is if you download a completely separate application, that should be in bright orange on the front page and download page. "VLC Media Player required for DVD encryption!"

I've already got VLC, so it doesn't matter to me. I'm just sayin, I know plenty of people who don't, but they do have handbrake, and this should be made more clear.

Handbrake was never really a DVD ripper. It is a media file extractor & converter with a nice GUI and a useful batch queue. The fact that it was also able to decrypt DVDs for a while was a nice feature, but it makes more sense to just let the VLC libraries handle that. It offers two benefits: 1. By off-loading the decryption library work, the devs can spend time improving other features instead of playing DVD-encryption scheme whack-a-mole. 2. It avoids the potential legal hassles of distributing a DVD ripper that bypasses "anti-piracy" encryption.

I guess so. But it's still a DVD ripper in most of my friend's and family's eyes. I remember on MacBreak weekly a kid was talking about using handbrake, and Merlin Mann and the others were remarking about the kid's knowledge of software that's renowned for bypassing DVD encryption. That's why everyone downloads the thing! So they can rip movies and put them on iTunes or in their iPods, to ignore how people are using the software is crazy. I know this isn't a business and it's all open source and whatnought, so nobody really cares. I have no problem with using the VLC libraries, I just think it's really silly not to make it more clear to people. It's no wonder why people are confused.

But that's all *really* off topic. Handbrake is still crashing on me

1. The activity log is filed to disc: http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/ActivityLog Please post the entire log from there.
2. HandBrake has never had good ripping abilities. It has neversupported anything beyond basic css.
3. The application pops up and tells you when you launch it if you don't have VLC installed. (next version will even tell you if you have the wrong version installed).
4. The notice was on the Front Page, News file, Appcast Update and of course, at application startup. That's more than enough IMO.

A notice at startup seems good enough to me as well. What's most surprising to me is just the concept that handbrake's primary purpose is *not* a DVD ripper. It'd be interesting to take a survey of handbrake users to see how they're using it.

ok, here's the log.

You seem to be confused about just what a DVD ripper is.

A ripper (alone) is not going to let you put DVD files on to your iPod or in iTunes. The result of a DVD "rip" is a VIDEO_TS folder full of VOB files. This folder behaves just like the DVD as far as most playback software is concerned, and can be used to burn a backup copy to a DVD-R.

Mac the Ripper has been the most popular app for ripping DVDs on the Mac for years now. It used to be free, up until version 2.6.6, but they've begun charging for 3.x because of the extraordinary effort it has begun to demand for them to keep up with tricky new DVD copy-protection schemes.

HandBrake extracts those files (from the DVD itself, or from an already-ripped source on your hard drive) and converts them into other media formats. That's a different function entirely from what people usually call a "ripper."

Many people (including me) prefer to rip the DVDs first using a ripper program, then use HandBrake to convert a lot of files at once, especially with TV series DVDs.

Right, I realize that. I guess it's semantics. What I mean by "ripper" is that it converts the video on a DVD to a movie file format. I do use MactheRIpper sometimes when I have a lot of files.. But how is that related to the VLC thing? If I don't have VLC on my computer, can I put in a DVD and take the video off of it or not? That's how I assume most people use handbrake.

The answer is "yes, as long as the DVD is not encrypted with css."

Since nearly all commercial DVDs use css, you either need to use a ripper to create an unencrypted archive first, or else have VLC installed to decrypt it on the fly. As of the current version, Handbrake will not decrypt DVDs for you and it's not likely it ever will in future versions, for a host of very good reasons.

Okay, all you techies! I am a brand new Mac owner/user and part of why I chose Mac was because I was told that it could be used to archive my DVD's and play via HDMI to my TV straight from my Mac mini. I am having a really hard time on these blogs because I don't know enough lingo. Could someone please help me? I am using Handbrake to pull my DVD's onto my computer harddrive, but it keeps crashing about halfway thru. I don't know if my Handbrake settings are off. From your previous answers, I have downloaded and activated VLC and even pulled my movie into the playlist so that I know it can go thru there. I am trying to get a basic download with a finished file at about 1GB size. I am including my activity log, so that you can make something of it (since it is just gibberish to me!). Please reply and walk me thru this step by step! I'm frustrated. Some of my DVD's have ripped (about 10 in all) but I have more failures than successes at this point. I had similar problems trying to use MactheRipper, and I just liked Handbrake's user friendliness more than that program. I just need someone to walk me thru a solution! Thanks from a Mac newbie and ripping-novice!
