Cannot write metadata to .m4v files

Post by bigrich »

Hello. I have a batch of video files that I created (m4v files) using the Apple TV preset in version 0.9.2. I was previously able to edit metadata in a tag editing software. After upgrading to version 0.9.3, I used the legacy Apple TV preset to create more .m4v files, and I am no longer able to edit the metadata in any program. Although I am able to play the files in Quicktime, the files no longer contain bitrate information or video length (hh:mm:ss)

Please advise. Thank you.

Re: Cannot write metadata to .m4v files

Define 'in any program'. Which programs have you tried? Does the metadata show up correctly in iTunes, for instance?

By 'in any program', I meant like TagTuner for windows (www.tagtuner.com; the programmer added m4v support) or better example, MetaX for Mac (www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/metax.html). If I attempt to write metadata to the file in iTunes, the information is stored in the library, but metadata is not written into the file. Writing data to the file is the functionality I lost, which I seek to regain.

The process I speak of is much like writing Tag Info to MP3s. I was able to do this same thing with my m4v files when I used 0.9.2 to create the m4v, but now the ability is lost after using 0.9.3. If I use a program such as VisualHub to convert the .0.9.3 created m4v file to mp4, I am once again able to tag the converted file.

Thoughs?

Thank you.

MetaX has had some known issues in the past because of assumptions it made about container layout:

http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php ... 93&p=49304

I believe the problems you are having are with the taggers rather than the content. I don't know much about TagTuner, but it doesn't sound like it's been baked very long. MetaX (see above) had *serious* issues that were thankfully later corrected, but I'm not sure what version you are using.

Can't speak about iTunes tagging, since its behavior is largely undefined *laughs*.

In short, 0.9.3 changed a lot about the way the mp4 atoms are structured, which is entirely legal per spec but 'breaks' a lot of software that expects things to be "where they always were". That software is broken and in need of fixing.

You might want to try MetaX for Windows. I used the Mac version as a model, and with a lot of help from Rodney, have a version that works on Windows. 0.93 did cause some problems with chapters, but that is fixed in the latest version. You can find it at http://www.danhinsley.com/MetaX.htm.

And Dan, we are eternally grateful for your efforts, sincerely. I thought someone had started building a snow fort in hell when MetaX came to Windows. =) Thanks so much!
