Hi,

When i convert a DVD to use with my Apple TV with Handbrake the subtitles are bad quality.
Also, on my Apple TV the sign "HD" (high definition) isn't on the movie, is this because the movie isn't converted to HD?

Is there a way to have perfect subtitles and a HD movie with Handbrake?

A DVD isn't HD, so why would you expect the AppleTV to show it as one?

Picture is ok only the subtitles are not in good quality.

Hi,

I have similar results with subtitles. The recoding of the DVD-video to H264 is very high quality (PS3 preset), but the quality of the subtitles is below par (very jagged).

Hopefully can someone help us with this issue.

What are your settings? I've having issues w/ Subtitles, too, & have attached my log - I can't determine which language to use as the subtitle when the same language is listed 2x but NO differentiation is made between the listings in the drop-down list box. I'm trying to convert "Yo Yo Girl Cop" - Japanese film - w/ subtitles & it's taken me 3x to do this! That's 15hrs!!! What a pain. But I finally go the rigth language combo as the "primary" language to use Jap 2.0 in stead of Jap 5.1 & the subtitles FINALLY appeared!!!! using one of the ambiguous English subtitle selections.

I've actually used HB on MANY foreign films & have had to use subtitles in all of them. That's why I ask about your settings. It may have an unexpected effect as my recent experience certainly did.

Does anyone know how to use the activity window to correctly select the right "spoken" language & the right "subtitle" language the FIRST TIME w/o having to waste 15hrs in trial & error?? Thx...

Yes, get a correctly mastered DVD. It isn't Handbrake's fault.

That being said, just converted for 2 or 3 minutes, then stop. You should get an .MP4 that is corrupted and has a few oddities, but you'll have an "example" of what you'll get out.

Also, when you're posting such a long log, what makes you *not* stop and think "hey this is a pain to scroll through", and put it in

The appearance of the subtitles is not really up to HandBreak. That is entirely up the company that created the DVD. If they use a ragged, block like font then that is what you are going to get. The subtitle data is stored as a time coded image sequence that is displayed over the video.

Play back the same DVD on the same screen with subtitles turned on, and I think you will find that HandBrake puts out subtitles that look every bit as good as what it gets from the DVD.

Sadly, good-looking subtitles are seldom a high priority with DVD producers.
