Problems Converting Blu-Ray to Apple TV

Post by allanmuir »

Firstly allow me to congratulate you on a fantastic program! THANKS!!

I have been successfully converting DVD's for use with my ATV and the quality is superb!

I am now trying to convert my Blu-Ray disks as well as in the future my HD DVD's So far I have only tried to convert Blu-Ray disks without success. The following is the steps I am taking:
1. Rip my Blu-Ray disk using ANYDVD HD on a PC to the D: Drive.
2. Launch Handbrake on my MacBook Pro and locate the M2ts file on the PC (successfully completed many conversions with DVD's but not Blu-Ray)
3.Once the handbrake screen returns to the initial main screen it starts to scan the source file (I presume) but then nothing else happens.

I am using the latest version of ANY DVDHD, Handbrake, VLC

I would appreciate any assistance!

Many Thanks!

Allan Muir

next snapshot/release will have better (dare I say excellent) support for blu-ray
in the mean time, you could learn how to compile it yourself, its fairly simple

I was led to believe that many people are successfully converting their Blu-Ray disks to ATV. Is ther something I am doing incorrectly, am I missing some steps or software or Codec etc.

Please advise.

Thanks

Sure, I've converted a number of HD-DVD and Bluray sources with Handbrake without any problems. However, I'm using development code, so I'm benefiting from the improvements/fixes made since .9.3 was released. You can either compile the code yourself, or wait for the next snapshot/official release.

Now I am completely lost. Compile the code????

If possible a step by step or copy and paste code would be extremely helpfull.

Thanks.

Source code. If you need that level of walk though, then your out of luck, sorry. Compiling source code is not for inexperienced users. You'll simply have to wait for the next developer snapshot or official public release.

Thanks for your response. I guess I will bin the idea of encoding my Blu-Rays/HD DVD's.

Thanks anyway.

Aye Laddie I will wait and look forward to the next snapshot. By the term snapshot does that mean the next release of Handbrake?

No, It's pre-release code, that is, alpha/beta type thing.

When we say 'excellent support for Blu-Ray', do we mean:
1. Being able to point HB to the BDMV directory and have it automatically load the titles and chapters?
2. Being able to appropriately label the audio sources? - currently, even the latest dev build still lists the audio sources as 'Unknown AC3 or Unknown DTS)
??? Does anyone know?

Re: Problems Converting Blu-Ray to Apple TV

Over the holidays I upgraded to .9.3 and decided to give blu-ray a try, so I got a hd-dvd/bluray reader from macsales for my mac pro. I used ANYDVD to rip 3 disks that I own as a test. 2 AVC and 1 VC-1:

1. The Invisible (AVC with a English DD track)
2. Tropic Thunder (AVC with only True-HD, no DD)
3. The Invasion (VC-1 with a True-HD track)

In 0.9.3 I was able to rip the AVC movies, but since only 1 had a 640kbps DD track, I got french on tropic thunder, but it looked great, and played well on the ATV. I just used the standard ATV preset. The VC-1 rip was just unrecognized. So I decided to try tsmuxer to work out the audio issues. I found that the beta version of tsmuxer allowed even chapters, and it read the playlist files, so should fix spanning across m2ts files. Seemed to work great, and I downgraded true-hd tracks where necessary, and unchecked LPCM tracks. Worked fine running in a VM on my mac pro. When I tried to rip my NEW m2ts files from tsmuxer with 0.9.3, all went to hell. So I checked here on the forum, and it seemed some issues may be fixed with dev builds. So I compiled yasm from the source and then compiled HandBrake svn v2071.

1. I love the new picture settings and preview, great work.
2. Not only did everything rip correctly, but the audio tracks were now labeled english, and defaulting nicely.
3. To my surprise, the VC-1 movie (the invasion) was recognized, and it ALSO ripped correctly.
4. Handbrake did not recognize the chapters, but I can always edit them later in metax if I want to. I found that if I just leave OFF the chapter markers in HB, then the ATV will move ahead about every 5 mins when you skip ahead like to next chapter, same back. This is fine with me. If you leave the just one chapter, it is horrible, because when you skip, it will jump all the way to end.

Well, I actually just finished with my family sitting down and watching The Invisible and The Invasion, and here are my observations. First some background on my system, its pretty sweet. I have an ATV of course, and a samsung bd-p2500, all connected through my Denon AVR-3808ci. The speakers are Definitive Technology BP2000s in the front, and BP2002s in the rear. I am outputing to a calibrated Panasonic HD 1080P projector (PT-AE3000U) onto a draper luma 2 screen, with about a 125" viewing diagonal. Blurays and even ATV 720p rented movies look spectacular on this setup, especially when the lights are all off and in cinema mode. My ripped DVD and Digital Copy movies all play from my mac pro in another room through iTunes streaming, nothing is actually on the ATV. My iTunes library is not actually on my mac pro, but in a 6TB linux server in the basement, and the whole house is wired via CAT 5. No wireless to the ATV, everything is gigabit except for the net adapter on the atv, but it plugs into a gigabit switch behind the ATV and components. My ATV is updated to the latest software, with NO hacks. I list all that to preface my observations, since your setup may vary.

1. At first, especially with The Invisible (QT says it has a bitrate of ~3500kbps), I noticed it seemed darker than it should, saw some compression artifiacts (very minor) and some loss of sharpness during some motion. Even streaming, there was NO hesitation or jittery behavior at all. I was dissapointed, but I turned on the BD player, and put in the disc. The issues I saw, were actually present on the disc! It was just not the best encode. I switched back and forth, and they looked virtually identical. The only REAL difference I saw was an EXTREMELY slight loss in clarity/sharpness with the ATV, but that was due to it being 720P, and the BD being 1080P. You had to strain to notice the difference, it was fantastic. Watched the whole movie with no issues. FF and RW scanning was not as good with rented, but I realized rented are always played from the ATV HD, not streamed from the mac pro. So if I copied the movie to the ATV, I bet that would solve the issue.

2. I scanned through Tropic Thunder (QT says it has a 3775kbps bitrate) and it also seemed great, but I didn't watch the whole thing.

3. The invasion was also perfect, watched all the way through. But there were 2-3 parts, where I noticed some jumpiness/hesitation. So I checked the bitrate, it is listed at ~6500kbps. This movie is in Full 16:9, so there is no cropping, and with the extra size, I think it put the br over the edge. I encoded all with the standard ATV preset, using CQ 59%, but it was too much on this movie. I am reencoding it now at 2 pass 4500 ABR, and will see how that does.

4. Sound, ok, you def lose there. I LOVE uncompressed PCM and DTS master when it is available. And when you switch back and forth from the bluray to ATV DD, you can tell the difference, but its tolerable. On a lesser audio system, you may not notice as much or at all.

Anyway, I will work on some more rips, I had my daughter bring up my box of blurays, so far the random 3 I picked are great. I tried to pick both AVC and VC-1, and some older and newer titles. So hopefully I am successful with all, we will see.

I have a few HD-DVD disks I would like to rip, is there a tsmuxer like app to bridge from EVO to HB?

For the record, like I said, I used the ATV preset to encode, I just pumped the width in picture settings up to 1280 if the frame rate was FILM. In the future, though, I may start using 2p ABR of 4500 to make sure I don't go over budget like I did with The Invasion. I am surprised how well it played the 6500kbps DD movie.

Great work gentleman, let me know if you would like me to test anything special, or send some small samples of the rips.

I would not recommend using ABR with HD sources like bluray or hddvd. Instead lower CQ to 55-57%.

If the Bluray m2ts has a compatible AC3 track, you should be able to feed the file directly to handbrake without much problem. Hddvds require you to demux the evo file, convert the audio to AC3, and remux before feeding to handbrake.

Curious, why would you not recommend? I def would rather use CQ, but didn't want to experiment with every movie, and if it went over, take the time to reencode, you know?

I reencoded The invasion over night using ABR of 4500, and then encoded The Fifth Element both using CQ of 59 and ABR of 4500. So far carefully scanning of the invasion, it looks great. I zeroed in on the handheld shots and heavy action, and it looks VERY good.

That is correct, but you can't tell what language they are, and when encoded the QT movie shows them as Unknown Language, trivial, but it bothers me for some reason. Also, tsmuxer reads the mpls file, and groups m2ts's together to make one for HB. I am looking for a bluray I may have with like an unrated and rated version, to see if that works as expected. Also, I am finding many more movies WITHOUT a DD track.

I've never liked the idea of forcing the encoder to maintain a known average bitrate unless file size is of the most importance. I haven't done it with DVDs, and I certainly wouldn't do it with HD sources. I think its best to let the encoder decide what is necessary to encode the video, and allow it to back off on less complex scenes and vice versa. Work done elsewhere on this forum has shown that the AppleTV can handle bitrate spikes up to ~10,000kbps if I recall correctly, but I believe that content was synced and not streamed.

I haven't run into any movies that weren't a single .m2ts file on the disc, but would adjust accordingly if/when I ever do.

As for sources without AC3, the TrueHD soundtrack will likely have a substream that contains the AC3 5.1 information for backwards compatibility (I've recently learned that this applies to Bluray and not HD-DVD). SVN builds of Handbrake should have better luck of making use of this information directly.

As for sources without AC3, the TrueHD soundtrack will likely have a substream that contains the AC3 5.1 information for backwards compatibility (I've recently learned that this applies to Bluray and not HD-DVD). SVN builds of Handbrake should have better luck of making use of this information directly.
On blu-ray, TrueHD and DTS-HD are optional codecs and therefore are required to be accompanied by ac-3 (for truehd) or dts (for dts-hd).

Good information on the audio codecs, I just assumed the new svn build would not handle truehd or dts hd like .9.3, so I will try to decode without tsmuxer.

I looked on apple dev site, it said actually up to 12mbps spikes. I think I may just use 59 on all 2.35 or so aspect movies that are cropped, and try 57 or 55 on the full uncropped movies.

Re: Problems Converting Blu-Ray to Apple TV

Post by allanmuir »

I decided to try again and convert a Blu-Ray to ATV. Firstly I decided to do a test with one of the smaller M2TS files. This worked perfectly! I then decided to use the Main M2ts file (largest) actual movie file. Sadly 4 hours of scanning (see code) I am still no where closer to being able to convert the file. Am I doing something wrong? or could the M2ts file have a problem. I used AnyDVD HD to rip the movie/disk. I then chose the largest M2ts file as I believe this is the movie file and the shorts. Then the scanning starts, 4 hours later still scanning.

HELP Please!!!

Allan

Re: Problems Converting Blu-Ray to Apple TV

Post by allanmuir »

I decided to re-visit converting a Blu-Ray movie.
Firstly I tried to convert a small M2TS file as a test to see what would happen. This converted nicely into an ATV file. I then decided to convert the main movie M2TS file (largest file in the directory. I nearly gave up after 4 hours of waiting as it scanned the file. Thankfully the scan completed but sadly when I tried to preview the picture I just got a slim grey verticle rectangle. Below is the code. The Blu Ray movie was ripped using AnyDVD HD.

Questions:

1. How long should it take to scan a normal movie file (M2TS)?
2. How long does it take roughly to completely encode to ATV at default settings?
3. Is there something I am forgetting to do?

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks for your time!

Re: Problems Converting Blu-Ray to Apple TV

allanmuir wrote:I decided to re-visit converting a Blu-Ray movie.

Allan
You're still using 0.9.3, and you're expecting too much out of that code to convert Blu-rays easily. If someone is still interested in this who is more familiar with Handbrake versioning as it relates to the codecs used on this disc, maybe they'll post here, but I wouldn't count on it.

In addition, there is no "typical" encoding time, there's *way* too many variables with your computer setup, your encoding settings, and movie length to guess. That being said, I use *roughly* this preset, except I'm encoding at 720p or 1080p and I'm happy to get 6 fps.

ragboy,

I'm curious, what resolution you are encoding your videos at. My appletv jerks too much with 1280x720 @3000kbps... You mentioned that they look great, so I'm wondering what you are doing...

if you're streaming over wifi, that could be too much. if you're able to download it to the apple tv and it still stutters, then its your settings

I've tried a couple of things...

1. FIrst, I was hardwired through ethernet (100mbps) accessing my M4Vs on an Infrant NAS. -- Jerks too much.
2. Then, I configured my appletv through my Airport Extreme running N at 5GHz and it still Jerks..

I have yet to try running it off the local hard drive. I will try that next and report my findings.

I am curious though, the HD movies that you can rent off iTunes, what actual resolution and data rate are they? Does anyone know? Does seem to play beautifully and look great.

720p, but you have to make sure it is at 24FPS. My encodes are anywhere from 3000kbps to 5500kbps, and they work perfect. But I do have both my ATVs hardwired, no wireless.
