Audio garbled in video from Canon camera (HandBrake 0.9.3)

Post by Aetles »

I have a AVI video made by a Canon Ixus 800 IS (European name) that I tried to convert with HandBrake 0.9.3 (to H.264 MP4 video) but the audio came out all garbled. Is this to be expected?

I did all the "Must Read" searches but couldn't find anything about this. I guess since HandBrake didn't convert other source before 0.9.3 it's a new kind of problem.

8-bit LPCM? Wow. I've never even seen that (well, outside of Windows 3.1 ;). I'm not sure HB can grok 8-bit audio input.

I guessed it had something to do with the audio codec. Even though it maybe old or unusual it's out there in millions and millions of Canon compact cameras.

I wish Canon would have used H.264 video, because the file size of the video is ridiculous (which is why I wan't to convert it). I've been using VisualHub before (which handles the audio just fine) but somehow the colors where slightly changed and now that VH is dead I was hoping for HandBrake.

I'm probably not adding anything useful, but I have the same problem with the .mov's from my Panasonic TZ3 which records fairly similar video/audio.

Here's my log:

Your pretty much out of luck guys. It looks like it's unsupported right now.
Unless of course your camera has an option to change the audio format.

Guys, you may be able to use MPEG streamclip and the x264 QuickTime component (much better than Apple's rubbish implementation of H.264).

First, install the x264 component, then install MPEG streamclip and open your video file. Hopefully MPEG streamclip will be able to handle the audio codec. You can then export to H.264 with AAC by going to File->Export to QuickTime or Export to MPEG-4. Then choose "x264encoder" in the drop-down at the top of the export window.

This will use QuickTime to do the video and audio decode, the x264 component to do the video encode, and QuickTime for the audio encode. If your video files are large, it may be quicker to see if you can do an export with MPEG streamclip that passes-through the video untouched and converts the audio to something HandBrake will like (say 16 bit, 32 kHz AIFF/WAV), then encode the file with HandBrake. Whether or not this is faster depends on whether the libraries HandBrake uses are faster at QuickTime for video decode, the probability of which is quite high.

Good luck!

Ok, too bad, but at least I know it wasn't me :)

Afaik, unfortunately they don't. Resolution and fps is usually the only options available.

Newer cameras will probably use H.264 video (I know some of them already do) but most of them sold so far don't.

Thank you for the detailed explanation, I didn't know of any of those (coming from the comfort of VisualHub).

I tried this and it worked very well. MPEG streamclip handled the audio just fine. Finally a working solution. And MPEG streamclip has a batching function, which is crucial when you have a lot of clips to convert. I haven't tried the second suggestion yet (passing through the video untouch), but if speed becomes and issue I'll try.

Now I'll just have to learn what all these options means (or which ones I don't have to care about), boy are there options... :)

Glad it's working for you :-).

If you're talking about the QT x264 component options, take a look at the HandBrake help files, you should be able to figure out which advanced options in HandBrake correspond to the QT x264 component options (because both HandBrake and the QT x264 component make use of the x264 project, they have similar options but laid out differently, HandBrake in a much more user-friendly/intelligible manner).

I'm having the same problem too also with the Canon SD800 (but this time on Windows Vista). Anyone figured a specific solution with HandBrake? Thanks!

No. HandBrake doesn't currently support that audio codec. You'll have to use other tools instead.

No offence but it was made quite clear by the answers in this thread that there's no way to "figure" a solution since it's an unsupported audio codec.

Can someone point me at a small sample of the video from this camera? I believe the problem is due to a change in the way ffmpeg handles pcm_u8 audio. It used to convert all audio to signed 16-bit linear format, which is what HB expects. Recently it looks like they changed it to convert to signed 8 bit linear format which HB doesn't know how to deal with & would cause the behavior described in this thread. I can fix the decoder to handle this but need a sample to test. Thanks.

Never mind, I found a sample on the Canon Japan site. The problem is what I thought - HB is getting u8 (1 byte) audio from ffmpeg when it expects s16 (2 byte) audio and therefore doing many wrong things. I'll try to get a fix in for this sometime this weekend so it makes the next snapshot.

That would be fantastic for the Canon users out there! Thanks for looking into this.

Thank you for solving this issue, van. I'm almost certain I'm suffering from this problem converting videos from my Canon PowerShot SD630. Would you like me to test the fix on my videos? If so, can you send me a Windows GUI build that includes the fix?

We'll have a snapshot out in the near future which you'll be able to try.

This is great. A naive question: how/where do you download a snapshot?

I have a Panasonic TZ5 and HB is having the same problems with the sound which is the following

Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 64.0 Kbps
Channel(s) : 1 channel
Sampling rate : 8 000 Hz
Resolution : 8 bits

So I look forward to testing next release. Many thanks to s55.
